Just read Neil Warnock saying that he's glad to be out of the league cup and that it needs revamping! Well I for one do not agree as the feeling of winning the trophy is just one of the best moments ever and perhaps he'd feel different if he had! Anyway I hope we push on and do as well as we can, surely it would give everyone a boost, fans and players alike. And I know, "Q" the WUMS saying that's all we have ever won etc etc etc, well at least I've seen Leicester win a trophy
There isnt alot they can do with the carling cup to make it better. Except put more prize money in it
What annoys me is that when we were winning it, it was deemed rubbish, and now the big clubs have been winning over the years (except brum), its more fashionable.
It benefits clubs that have large squads, i dont think theres anything wrong with Norwich QPR or Swansea bowing out, as they need to be as fit as possible for the prem, and championship clubs will say they are "focusing on promotion". We saw a great turnout when we got drawn against Man City last year, and the revenue for that match alone must have been worth staying in the competition for. I hope he does continue to bring in the "squad" for lower league opposition in all competitions, as no team wants to lose points in the league games due to fatigue.
SCFox: the LC is not more fashionable - it's always had a 'prestige' problem, especially since the 1990s (ie with the advent of the Prem and CL. Big clubs win it nowadays because they can put out 2nd string sides and still progress with relative ease.
I've never been less bothered about it than I am this season. Still, I enjoyed our come back last night. If we were in the Premiership though I'd expect us to give both competitions a real crack. It's pathetic to accept lower mid-table mediocrity because it's financially beneficial whilst sacrificing any excitement. I am not looking forward to the possibility of promotion just to survive relegation in the Premiership. Football is about winning, winning trophies most of all. Frankly I'm a bit embarrassed for Norwich, Swansea, QPR and especially Sunderland that they have lost their best chance of winning something so early in the season. In truth, our tenure under Martin O'Neill would have been very average without the 3 Cup finals. I suppose it's a bit different for Swansea but it's not as if we haven't finished in the top 10 of the top division before. So myself I don't like this attitude towards the Carling Cup.
You just have to look at Birmingham last season. They won the cup but got relegated and that is looked at as a bad season. If you offer teams in this league either to win the cup or get promoted they would take promotion
Yeh but I don't buy this bull about them having to choose. If you suffer one injury in a Cup match and go down a the end of the season, it's because your squad/management isn't good enough anyway. Players can get injured in League matches, players can get injured in training. I just heard Nicky Maynard did his knee injury whilst skiing! Squads should be prepared for injuries, not needing to wrap all their first team players in cotton wool. And tbh I'm not sure the fans would give up that day at Wembley for survival. I probably wouldn't. I don't consider 4th bottom an achievement. Birmingham went down because they played **** football and couldn't score enough goals or get enough points. They didn't go down because they won the league cup.
Its more hyped up now though than it was 10-15 years ago by the media, such as sky. This is, in my opinion , because the big sides winning it. Since 2005, chelsea have won it twice and man utd 3 times. Proud is right though. any leicester fan would take promotion
It's always the same - no one cares about the league cup until the semi finals - then all clubs (even the big ones) are up for it. Old Punch dont care as he's been dumped out - he would care if he got through.
The League Cup (like the FA Cup) is boring because a top 6 club wins it practically every season. Revamp it? make the higher up clubs enter before the lower clubs.
