From Racing Post: Crowley escapes horror fall with broken nose BY DAVID MILNES9:16AM 1 NOV 2016 JIM CROWLEY escaped with just a broken nose from a four-horse pile-up at Kempton on Monday that resulted in him and Freddy Tylicki being hospitalised, his agent confirmed on Tuesday morning. The champion jockey was discharged from St George's Hospital in Tooting on Monday night, where his counterpart Tylicki is conscious but remains in intensive care awaiting further tests. On Crowley, who on Tuesday was due to ride in Germany, his agent Tony Hind said: "Jim was very lucky in that all he has done is broken his nose and I spoke with him last night. "I know he's getting plenty of rest this morning and won't be riding for a while but he was only going to ride on for a couple of weeks anyway as he had no plans to ride through the winter. Hopefully he'll make a full recovery." The incident occurred when Tylcki's mount Nellie Deen appeared to clip heels with eventual winner Madame Butterfly before the home turn, causing her to fall and bring down Electrify (Crowley), Skara Mae (Steve Drowne) and Sovrano Dolce (Ted Durcan). Both Crowley and Tylicki were taken to hospital on spinal boards. Durcan's ankle broken The latter pair of jockeys walked back to the weighing room, but it later emerged that Durcan had broken his ankle. He said: "Daniel Muscutt very kindly drove me from Kempton to A&E at Addenbrookes (Cambridge) where they confirmed a fracture in my right ankle. "It's in plaster now, and I might need a small operation, but it could have been so much worse. It's just annoying, as I planned to ride on until the middle of December and then take a holiday. With a broken ankle you just feel a bit helpless." Fingers crossed everyone makes a speedy recovery.
Freddy Tylicki's condition is still a heck of a concern. Wish him and the other guys injured in this nasty incident a full and quick recovery.
Not really stick but yes, in general, they are tough little buggers. I broke my ankle recently and was walking around (in pain) thinking it was a bad sprain. Got bullied into going to hospital the following day and had to stay in for an op to put in a rod and pins.
Another update: Tylicki in good spirits in hospital after horror fall BY DAVID MILNES 8:01PM 1 NOV 2016 FREDDY TYLICKI remains in a stable condition in the intensive care unit at St George's Hospital in Tooting following the four-horse pile-up at Kempton on Monday but was reported by one of his weighing-room colleagues to be "awake and chatty". Tylicki, who was set to partner Mehronissa at the Breeders' Cup this weekend, was airlifted to the St George's spinal unit after getting the worst of the Kempton melee. His mount Nellie Deen clipped heels with eventual winner Madame Butterfly before the home turn in the mile fillies' maiden, which caused her to fall, and Electrify (Jim Crowley), Skara Mae (Steve Drowne) and Sovrano Dolce (Ted Durcan) were brought down. Drowne was the only one of the four riders to escape unscathed and was well enough to ride at Wolverhampton on Tuesday. Champion jockey Crowley suffered no more than a broken nose but Ted Durcan, who initially limped back to the weighing room, was subsequently found to have broken an ankle. 'More positive than I was expecting' Tylicki's friend and fellow jockey Martin Lane, who was at Kempton to ride in two of the races which were abandoned after the incident, went to St George's after racing and is one of the few people to have seen the 30-year-old since his fall. He said: "It can be a bit daunting in hospital on your own, so I thought I'd go and keep Freddy company for a few hours as I know him and his family well. "He was awake and chatty to everyone in the ICU before he had the first of his scans on Monday night, which was more positive than I was expecting before I arrived. He was in good spirits but a bit groggy as they had sedated him. I hung around until Freddy's sister arrived from Ireland later in the evening. He's conscious, so hopefully he can pull through." Lisa Hancock, chief executive of the Injured Jockeys Fund, said: "Martin Lane was fantastic in his support of Freddy Tylicki at the hospital after the fall until his sister was able to fly in from Ireland and also his godparents travelled down from Newmarket. "All four jockeys received exemplary care from Dr Peter Johnson, the senior medical officer at Kempton, who quickly dispatched both Freddy and Jim Crowley to hospital."
Oh dear, that is very, very sad. I remember when I had my cycling accident, and was lying in the middle of the road on my back, my first thought was the 2 guys I know from work who are in a wheelchair after cycle accidents. Despite a badly broken arm (which will no doubt trouble me till the day I die) I am so thankful that I could walk away from the accident. My thoughts are with Freddy and his family, must be a very tough time.
Truly awful for Freddy. Let us hope something can be done for him to improve his paralysis. T7 is I guess much better than a C paralysis but could still mean a lifetime confined to a wheelchair. Bitter pill to swallow for any young sportsman. A reminder to all when we are riding that race from armchair at the weekend of what these guys are putting on the line. Best wishes to Freddy. If I were a praying man then they would be for him at this time.
Very sad. I didn't expect that after the earlier news. Hopefully advanced technology will find a way to make this temporary.
Very sad news. My thoughts are with Freddy and his family at this time. My admiration for the jockeys who do so much to keep us entertained through the years has always been high but, as Stick says, this is a reminder to us all of exactly what they are risking each time they go out there.
Indeed very very sad shows what absolute warriors jockeys are eavh and every time they take your the saddle...wish Freddie all the best
I have suggested to Michael the other handful of owners that any prize money Squire wins today be donated to Freddys charity. I hope they will all agree. If not I shall donate my share.
Although not a prolific poster on these boards, I do read most of the posts on a daily basis, I just wanted to post the following after my very own accident/fall. I have unfortunately suffered my own back problem after recently crashing off my own bicycle some 6 weeks ago now to which I caused great damage. I have only just come out of hospital to which I broke/cracked 4 bones in my back, broke 7 ribs, cracking another 3 for good measure, and other minor scrapes n bruises. I am ok now, well as good as I could be considering how much damage I've done to myself, and have a way to go to get back to full health which will come... I can only endorse what Oddy posted earlier on his bicycle accident that we are both glad to be alive and kicking but walking all the same. I have broken my C7 bone which is in the lower part of your neck, plus broken my T12 bone in my back with a couple more near my shoulder blades also. When my missus told me that Freddy had done his T14 bone which has subsequently paralysed him, my heart sank as I thought how lucky I was and how very unlucky he was... Just as a note to anyone who dos ride a bike without a helmet, DON'T, as the picture below shows, had I not been wearing one then I do not think I would be posting this today...!! I wish Freddy, and Jim, all the very best on their future, and to all jockeys who give us so much pleasure in this sport we love...
My God, Red, that was a horror accident you had. I wish you a complete recovery to full health, and reciprocate your good wishes to Freddy and Jim.
