Peterborough United eased into the second round of the Capital One Cup after a 5-1 victory over Colchester United at the Weston Homes Community Stadium with Lee Tomlin scoring the pick of the goals with a sublime curler into the top corner.

On the quarter hour mark, a left-footed free-kick from Grant McCann was expertly tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Sam Walker.

Moments later a glorious cross from McCann was met by Tomlin at the back post, but his half volley went over the bar from close-range.

Daniel Kearns was next to try his luck after finding a pocket of space on 24 minutes, but his shot cleared the crossbar.

Ibehre saw a tame shot saved by Olejnik after cutting inside Alcock, but clear cut chances were few and far between in the opening half and hour of the contest.

Bostwick volleyed a McCann free-kick over the top under severe pressure from Wilson on 38 minutes.

The deadlock was broken on 42 minutes as a superb cross from McCann was converted with a clinical header from centre back Gabi ZAKUANI.

The hosts levelled the scores within three minutes of the re-start as a clever move saw Morrison feed IBEHRE who side-footed past goalkeeper Olejnik from close-range.

Zakuani headed a Tomlin corner over the top on 49 minutes as Posh tried to clear their heads following that equaliser, which came within 90 seconds of the re-start.

Posh restored the advantage on 58 minutes as a deep cross from Daniel Kearns was met with a towering header at the far post by Tyrone BARNETT, who gave Walker no chance. Credit must go to McCann and Assombalonga who chased down a ball back to Walker to put the pressure on the goalkeeper who sliced his clearance to Kearns.

It was 3-1 to Posh on 67 minutes as Tomlin fed ROWE, who took a touch and fired an unstoppable left-foot shot past Walker and into the back of the net. Kearns rifled a volley wide moments later as Posh went in search of a fourth.

It was 4-1 moments later and this was the goal of the game, TOMLIN cut inside from the right and curled a stupendous effort into the top corner past a despairing dive of Walker, who had no chance.

Posh were now playing with supreme confidence and keeping the ball very well, restricting their hosts to only the odd foray forward.

On 80 minutes, Posh made it 5-1 as Alcock burst into the box and pulled the ball back for TOMLIN, who made no mistake, side-footing the ball past Walker.

The second round draw takes place at lunchtime on Sky Sports News on Thursday.

All 5 were good goals Minxy, but Tomlin's first was definitely the best - If Rooney or Bale had done that
in a Premiership match we would never hear the last of it, but do it at our level and the press are not interested.
