Another thread comparing Roy and Rodgers made me think about previous managers... who was good who was not. How would you rank our recent managers? For me, in order... Dalglish I Rafa (Big gap) Evans Houllier (Moderate gap) Rodgers Dalglish II (Big gap) Woy Souness Dalglish II major flaw was horrendous transfer policy otherwise his two cup finals in one full season probably would have placed him slightly higher.
I wouldnt include Rodgers. It is to soon. I'm to young to know or remember some of those. Houllier is the earliest I really remember. Rafa = Houllier Dalglish II Hodgson I'm not sure how it goes between Rafa and Houllier. Rafa got us CL, FA Cup, CL 2nd, League 2nd. Jumped between finishes of 5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 7th. Houllier got us the treble, the LC, 2nd in the League. Rafa had more money to spend, which got him Torres and Mascerano. Houllier inherited Owen, Gerrard, Carragher and Fowler from the youth system.
I was thinking in part how they moved us. Souness devastated us... Evans had moderate success and reversed the fall. Houllier had a long time in charge but we slowly decayed under his reign. He did have some good successes though. Rafa made us competative again under very trying circumstances. We plummeted under Roy... Dalglish II recovered slightly... We've fallen a little under Rodgers but look better.
this is a league table of performance right? well.... souness won a fa cup so woy was by far and above the single worst manager in LFCs history since shankly came in.... no question in my mind. for me honestly having lived dalglish mark i i have to say i'd not put him that high as while he did good he let his team age around him and ended up with jimmy bloody carter. for me rafa is tops since ***an.... kenny's first stint was second but by a little distance, after all rafa's legacy is saving our ass now, kennys was to hand souncess an aging team with injuries. Houllier is a far third as 2001 was a miracle year for him and not the norm. did well but wasn't that professional. evans for me would be ok but he had a lot of talent assembled and pure unprofessionalism meant in an era where frankly a bit more discipline and team ethic would have won things. For me if rodgers in 4 months can't be judged how can you judge roy hodgson? one can improve his positon the other failed. Kenny mark ii was beset with all sort sof issues, he claimed the signings but was that protecting players or what???? he won a cup! I'd put him higher than rodgers right now.
I think we fell under Dalglish II, not Rodgers. The second half of last season was awful. Maybe even worse than the half a season Roy Hodgson had. Even though Dalglish had funds that Hodgson didnt have. Dalglish started greatly. But new managers often have a big burst for the first 6 months to a year. But over time he couldnt keep it up. We had our worst season in 52 years.
I'm begining to think that history is not being kind Souness. When he took over the culture within the club had become very negative. As he said in his book players now wanted away from Anfield! To try and sustain success and re-build without the Board support that he needed, left Souness with an almost impossible task.
Fowler was already establish as one of the top strikers in England by the time Houllier arrived. GH ruined him by opting for Heskey and Owen ahead of him before stupidly selling him to a rival for breadcrumbs Rafa also inherited Gerrard and Carragher but at a better stage of their careers. He also got Hamann and Hyypia!
Since I can't recall the footy under Kenny mkI (watched lots of it since) and Souness (not so much lol) I will ignore them. 1) My favourite of the other five is without doubt Roy Evans. Excellent exciting football with some quality players. 2) Rafa is definitely next. 3) Hard to chose but I'll go for Kenny mkII because of the cup win and his first six months back at the club. Whoevers fault they were, the transfers were shocking! 4) A steady season for Rodgers will see him move to third for me. All depends on the January window and finishing at least eighth (equal to last season despite the clear cut backs) 5) Without dout, Roy! Shocking football and worse press conferences. It just wasn't the right fit.
I'm certainly not but nor am I convinced he is the saviour. He has a lot the prove purely because it is early days for him, both as a manager and as a manager of LFC
I have huge doubts that we will rise above midfield with Rodgers in charge but I'm not totally writing him off. Performances-so-far he is below our average manager but I am open-minded. He could surprise me and turn out to be a gem. I've been wrong before. I remember a time that Skrtel looked a terrible buy. Definately wouldn't say that now. His debut was one of the single worst performances by a red but he became very solid over time. Rodgers could improve too.
Hodgson wasn't better than Souness, Souey won the FA Cup whereas Hodgson only won Ferguson's seal of approval to take the Liverpool job.
Quite honestly I'd put Rafa after Bob. ***an inherited Bob's team and only lasted two full seasons which culminated in Heysel But he did sign Molby, after losing out on Charlie Nicholas, thank ****!
Fair enough. I would argue that although results are below the average manager we have had, the team he has to work is much worse than the others had to deal with.
Rafa is the best thing that happened to Liverpool. Look at the side he built. The academy is much better for his influence. Sterling, suso, Shelvey (who I don't rate btw), wisdom. The first team Johnson, agger, skrtel, reina. We have rafa to thank for his legacy. Kenny II took the club backwards
But your mind is full of cross dressing and being hen pecked, so we'll ignore your mind. Liverpool under Kenny I was a league winning team. Souness thought he was a big I am and took the team apart, and we have never recovered. He is and always will be the worst manager in the history of this club. he has totally destroyed his playing days reputation, and will never be fondly remembered. He also sold his story to the Sun bring to a close the most repugnant managership of our club ever.
