Thank you, I must admit somewhat to my shame that I have not consulted your site yet. I will do so henceforth...
1st March update; I have converted the first post on this thread to an 'Index' post with links. This means members can jump directly from the Index post to any post with a link provided. The link does not open a new window (well, not on my puter anyway) it just takes you straight to the thread you wish to view. This means members can post any number of replies they wish in this thread, and it won't make the tables/stats posts any more difficult to find. I hope this new feature helps more members to enjoy the thread. Regards, Lardy
1. Charlton Athletic season 1922-23 ... Third Division (South) ... newly updated 2. League Table (end of season) ... newly updated 3. League Position ... match by match ... newly updated Attendance figure notes; Home attendance figures given only. Figures given on dark background are for matches not played on a Saturday. Some attendance figures are approximate for season 1922-23. Exact figures are presumably not available. UPDATE NOTES Points totals have been added for all other league positions. These numbers are accented different colours for each multiple of 10 to make the table easier to interpret. 4. Starting XI ... match by match (League games only) ... newly updated Players are listed in order of appearance during the season. Colour key for squares in fixtures columns: Light Blue ................................... Played whole match ( green for goalkeepers. Zero in box means clean sheet) Light blue fading to black ...... Player retired injured before full time Light Blue fading to green ..... Player left the field injured but returned later and played the rest of the match Yellow ......................................... Player booked * Red .............................................. Player sent off * * As far as I know there were no yellow or red cards back in 1922. However players could be cautioned or 'booked' by the referee, and ultimately sent off I believe. Using the colours yellow and red are the easiest way to represent those things on the table. The 'Total Apps' column will show the total number of professional league games any given player will have played for Charlton at the end of any given season. Players newly signed for the 1922-23 season are highlighted in purple. UPDATE NOTES Extra information has been added regarding playing positions of several players. The new information is in dark red Original information is in dark blue 5. Team of the Season 1922-23 ... newly updated A performance table of the 11 players from Charlton Athletic's 1922-23 squad who played the highest number of league games that season. Each player is rated by the percentage of games won or lost that they played in, compared to the percentage of games won or lost by the whole match-day team throughout the season. Where a player started every game of the season, that player is included at the top of the table, but their ranking is listed as not applicable - this is because their personal win/lose percentages must be the same as that of the whole team. Also, here is a table of the five best performing players of the 1922-23 season who were not among the 11 who played the most league games. (minimum 10 first team league starts needed to qualify) 6. Background... the world of 1922-23 ... newly updated
I reckon 6th place. Outside chance of 5th or 7th. 4th place is about the very best I can hope for, but that will need a goal scoring revival. Getting to Wembley will need that too of course. Home advantage in the second play-off semi-final will be big for us if we can get it.
If agree with that. I’d go for 6th. As a team we have not progressed this season. Didn’t we limp home in 5th last year ?
No we finished in 6th place, so had to face 3rd place Shrewsbury in the play-off semi-finals. Lee Bowyer did a great job getting us there at all, since we were heading for nothing better than 10th under Gobbo. But the last day defeat by Rochdale was disheartening. This season Charlton have to finish on a high. We have Rochdale again for the last game of the regular season. We must give them a thumping to get into the right frame of mind. Dale might need a result themselves to avoid relegation, so a win is not a given. If the Addicks flop out of the play-offs again I don't think we will get another bite at promotion for a very long time. Assuming RD carries on taking the p*ss that is, and probably lives to be 100 years old.
Teams like Luton & even Portsmouth have improved past us this season. I think we could beat Doncaster or Peterborough over two legs, I would be less confident against Portsmouth or Sunderland. I’d put our chances of overall promotion at about 25%.
25% sounds optimistic to me. I would give us a 25% chance of getting to Wembley. But then only another 25% chance of beating whoever we will face there. A quarter of a quarter is 16 to 1 ... or about a 7% chance of promotion to the Championship.
Luton, Barnsley, Sunderland & Portsmouth will finish in the top 4 positions so if we finish 5th or 6th we would be playing Barnsley, Sunderland or Portsmouth in the play-offs. Luton are certs for top 2. Our chances of promotion this year are 30% in Semi Final and 50% in Final …. so about 16.65% I would say …. something like 6/1 or 8/1.
I don't see any way we can beat Sunderland. Portsmouth, Barnsley or Luton over two legs.We don't have the firepower. Personally I think Luton and Barnsley will finish in the top two, Sunderland third, Portsmouth fourth, us fifth and Doncaster sixth.
He thought he was joining a Club with ambitions of getting promoted to the Championship … he was wrong!
