A small but hot field of 6 assembled today for the running of the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at Flemington in Melbourne. The equal top ranked sprinter Lankan Rupee came to town with some serious concerns centering around his recent form. After doing more than his fair share of the bullocking in the Darley Classic where he went down to Terravista and Chautauqua, it was decided that he'd be given a colder ride. No more doing the hard work for others. The plan today was to sit on the boom sprinter Deep Field who came to the battle today with 5 slashing wins under his belt. Unbeaten, Deep Field started favourite at 10-9, while the seasoned champ went to the stalls at the juicy price of 6-4. Why were they such good odds? Because of his global ranking and the 4 previous G1 wins, which looked pretty good against Deep Field's lonely G2 success. It was hailed as the clash of the heavyweight champ versus the brash upstart. Going into the race, Lankan Rupees' trainer Mick Price said his champ was going to sit on Deep Field then test him as he'd never before been tested. Flemington. Page 2 race 7.
