The French national anthem - La Marseillaise - will be played before this weekend's Premier League matches.

A choral version will be played after the coin toss, with players from both teams coming together with match officials in the centre circle.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore described it as an act of "solidarity and remembrance" after the Paris attacks in which 129 people died.

La Marseillaise was sung before England's win over France on Tuesday.

There are 72 French players currently in the Premier League.

This seems slightly over the top to me.

There's a fine line between sympathy and mawkishness and I think the Premier League have just crossed it.

    Way over the top.

Maybe the ref's should wear a stripey jumper, a beret and have a string of onions dangling around their necks as well?

What happened in Paris was shocking but this is cringeworthy.

    IMO.

I think it's OTT, potentially inflammatory and I hope it doesn't come back and bite our arses.

I think the chances of God Save The Queen or Deutschland Uber Alles being sung before French football matches following a similar event in this country of Germany are somewhat remote.

I could see all the usual suspects having a fit if our anthem mentioned slaughtering your enemies and filling furrows with blood and demanding something more gentle and inclusive.

I'm fine with this. As it says in the article, there are 72 French nationals playing in the premier league and I think they deserve their chance to show they are as saddened and defiant as the players who played England on Tuesday. I'm thinking this will also be a chance for fans of all the clubs to show how they feel about what those ****s did in Paris.

These games are shown all over the world, football fans are the general public and we should send a message.

Ours mentioned crushing the Scots, until we dropped that verse.

I know. Soft-hearted bunch aren't we? Actually it still does, doesn't it? We just don't get that far along it nowadays. Only part of the French anthem is sung and more contentious parts of DeutschlandUber Alles don't get an airing nowadays.

Didn't they try and bomb a football game - so isn't it more about football coming together?

And **** off to the guy who said about it coming back around...

Our French striker was in Paris on Friday night - fortunately he was at home with his family
Steve Cotterill will assess his state of mind before the game
