If we get both Meyler and Campbell then he could lose his place in the team. Evans, Meyler and Quinn are nailed on for the midfield and I can't see Aluko getting dropped so that leaves no place for him. Crazy really because he is our captain and a great player !
Nobody is nailed on for a starting place. They all need to play well and do well in training in order to get picked. Plus we haven't got another striker yet, so it's a bit premature.
brady quinn meyler koren elmo then aluko playing in behind new striker is just fine by me, i think if meyler is even half the player we've seen so far then there's enough protection for a back 3 there without evans being nailed on.
Evans and Meyler have a good understanding. One stays, one goes. You rarely see them both bombing forward. I doubt SB will want to be without one or the other.
As other have said, no one is nailed on for a place in the starting 11. We've got to have strong competition in the squad and if Koren is on the bench some games, so be it.
Playing Meyler as the 'sitting' midfielder instead of Evans would be a mistake. Meyler is at his best when he has the freedom to make bursts forward and move out of position to break the play up. You need someone like Evans, perhaps a less glamorous player to enable others to play.
I was thinking this earlier, we could always rotate depending on who we are playing, Evans for tough games and mid table away games, whereas Koren for lower league teams and home games? It just shows how far Steve Bruce has taken us, from a player we relied on completely last year, to us talking about him not getting in the team!
But Meyler has done really well playing further forward and getting into the box, why sacrifice that playing him as the holding midfielder just to get Koren in the team. If he isn't performing as well as 11 others why make a place for him?
meyler is box to box so i'm not suggesting he holds, i've just seen enough to think he can add the bite we need plus get into the box too. he's got 4 alongside him to assist with defensive duties and a very accomplished back 3. i see the value of evans and agree with Donnytiger that is speaks volumes that a team that was so reliant on koren can now be set up without him and still be potent.
Some of you are getting ahead of yourselves. First FC has yet to sign so the issue is not valid. 2nd, if he does then he will have to earn his place in the team and 3rd, injuries and suspensions will also play a part in the 2nd half of the season. Nobody is, nor should be nailed on unless its James Chester.
Am I the only bloke on here that doesn't think the sun shines out of korens arse ? Great player but could do a hell of alot more if he could be arsed.
It's not an 'either or' situation. Having a few more decent players just means SB will have more options. He will be able to plan a strategy from the start that includes using impact players from the bench instead of just using subs to shore up the team when things aren't panning out.
