Just seen this ESPN article and it really does highlight how far we have to go commercially in order to really be able to compete.

Obviously the top four are one thing but I see no reason why we shouldn't be matching teams like West Ham and Swansea in terms of the figures we recieve.

Hopefully a season in Europe will earn an improved deal once the current Veho one expires.

Good find bazooka..... I hope that some Saints fans read this and realize that despite being in the same league and despite pushing the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham really hard in the league table, they will see that we are not in the same bracket commercially. Even Watford get more for their kit than we do.

This also is why we need to turn 5m players into 15-20m players.

    Long, long way to go.

I'm pretty sure saints could get a much better deal for the shirt sponsor without even trying, i was under the impression the reason our shirt sponsor is low is because we try to use local businesses for sponsors rather than international one's.

Another indication of how far we have to go to build our profile is that recent advert for Nivea using Liverpool players. We may have mocked, but I cannot see any company using Southampton in that way as our fan base and brand recognition around the world just isn't large enough. As Kreuger said we have to recognise our strengths and promote that...basically that comes down to our Academy and association with nice football.

I read somewhere that Katharina wouldn't want to be associated with a gambling site or money loan companies, so that is a large part of the market crossed out straight away.

It is admirable that Saints wish to support local companies such as AAP3 and Veho but football is a ruthless business. West Ham, Villa & Sunderland are earning 5 times more than us for their sponsors. We need to take advantage of the success we have enjoyed on the pitch and cash in on a big money sponsor next year.

Realistically we are not going to get a massive shirt sponsor and we would probably only get in a few million more by compromising principles. Peanuts compared with our other income. If we build up our public profile, a better deal will come along naturally.

Not sure it is that large a part ... there are a lot of companies out there who spend money on advertising and sponsorship that are not gambling or money lenders. I like that principle though.

Kit Sponsorship is nothing compared to our other revenue, I really admired Barca's charities deal with sponsorship (until they became bloodthirsty like everyone else, with Qatar airways) so wouldn't mind something like that, even if it meant we don't have 'as much' money as we could.

<doh> Jeez, I knew MUFC would be way out in front with the usual suspects following but to be so far down that list shows we have such a long, long way to go. Yep, knew but must admit, I'm in shock! :emoticon-0127-lipss

It's true. Also, the Liebherr family are extremely picky about who they will allow on the shirt.

To be fair, Barca still pay a couple of million to Unicef every year to have their logo on the back of their shirts. Think they get around £40m from Qatar Airways so you cant blame them.

I think we should be trying to get a deal of at least circa £5m per year. Not a huge amount in football terms but it is £5m extra revenue for effectively doing nothing.

Couldn't Katharina do a deal with the main Liebherr group for sponsorship? I think most Saints fans would love to see "Liebherr" emblazoned across the team's shirts. And there is a local connection with the cranes used in the docks after all.

Interesting. Think we're getting fleeced there - or giving someone a way too good deal. The exposure we've been getting as a progressive, young club, with international players, and now in Europe should be yielding way more than that from sponsorship. Bring back Draper Tools!

Yeah, that's an idea I've wondered about ever since the takeover. I get the impression that Liebherr don't do advertising that's as low-brow as being emblazoned on football shirts. That's fair enough I suppose, and I'd certainly rather a local business had the advertising space otherwise, rather than any betting/gambling/money lending establishment.

Would be nice though. Bit like PSV Eindhoven having Phillips on their shirts.

Very apt...an obvious link between large industrial machines and Victor. :)

That would be great. If that didn't come off, how about one of their big partners/customers.... must be some pretty big construction guys they could get 5m out off :)

I wouldn't want a gambling/money lending type on the shirt, however I would like to see us shake the "having a local company" approach. We need to grow commercially if we want to progress to the next level and compete better with the big guys.

    Wait until next season.

We've got a deal wrapped up on a new kit-maker - that will also give us a more bespoke design - and our shirt sponsorship with Veho ends this summer.
