Fwiw he was made redundant. But it still stinks. It might be that he wanted it (no idea) but, after 25 years service, the club should go all out to publicise his departure.

I'm not judging thr club for this one. Feels like we don't know enough about it. We don't know what they actually did.

I imagine employment law means the guy has been given a sizeable redundancy package after 25 years.

Not to mention the pay he has been given for 25 years and what has turned out to be near enough a job for life (at least until retirement age).

The opportunity his idiot son has been given at the club.

What's the complaint? He didn't get a big public pat on the back?

    Boo ****ing hoo.

Feels to me like he has been very lucky.

Imagine if the NHS or whoever else rolled out the red carpet every time a long term employee left.

What world do these people live in?

Interesting timing for this news, thought he left a few months ago.
Why publish a negative story now?
It's almost like someone has an agenda

By the way I agree it is poor form but conversely I bet there are a number of posters on this board who have been made redundant at one time or another and didn't go running to the press with a sob story, I didn't when I was finished just accepted it was part of life and got on with it

He didn’t leave months ago, he’s been on furlough. It’s a new low from the arseholes in charge.

If that's the case fair enough but there was a thread on RTG on 25th August headed "more redundancies" in which it was mentioned that he had been made redundant. Perhaps he had been given his statutory 90 days notice then and actually left more recently, hence the confusion.
I still don't see why this is a new low for the club. We have to accept that we are a bog standard 3rd division club and we have to cut our cloth accordingly, and unfortunately this means that people will have to leave.

According to that article and his son's tweet, he was made redundant 2 months ago. As disco says, it depends on the circumstances as we know nothing about the situation or departure. I do think an article of thanks on the club website should've been posted. God knows it would've been with most of the heirarchies we've had!

On another side of this, that article states that he's considering legal action. Employment law states that a role must be made redundant not a person. I.e. you cannot make someone redundant then give someone else their job. Happened with quite a few redundancy cases I've worked on for the union - but the NHS are clever to change a job role enough to make it a "different" job even though the tasks are essentially the same. The article states that they made him redundant and moved the U23s kitman into this position? That's is a whole host of illegal - but if they have added tasks to the role (so the kitman now looks after all levels of kit or something) than that's completely different. Big grey area

I agree with that but it has been a strange time and there has been much bigger **** on everyone's plate.

I have to think it's being suggested he has been mistreated in a more severe manner than that given his son's very public outburst.

He may have ****ed himself there! A young kid, trying to make his way in the game - might end up getting sacked for it as he's slating his bosses. Be like me slagging off the top brass in my part of the NHS on twitter!!

If they have combined the two jobs then one of the jobs is redundant, if there is no suitable alternative employment then one of the job holders will be surplus to requirement because of the restructuring.
Cooke will have a case of unfair dismissal if he can prove to an Employment Tribunal that he was discriminated against, when they chose him, because of one of the Protected Characteristics

Very true. He said considering legal action. Wonder what his payoff was! "Jack Rodwell - you've done nothing for the club, here's a few million. Cookie - you've done laods and been here ages from player to backroom staff. Here's a custard cream and a cheap cup of tea"

I hope they have paid him more the statutory redundancy Marcus, because that is paltry and has a maximum weekly salary, which I would bet will be less than his actual salary
We don't know the details but to make the redundancy lawful and if they have combined the two jobs on a lower pay scale, the club will have to have offered Cooke the job on the lower wage. If he has refused the lower wage then that effectively is their selection process

Sorry mate, I just won't condemn the club until I know more.

If this is all just about not making a big song and dance publicly then I have little sympathy.

For all any of us know he has been well looked after for 30 years of his life by a club that is now giving his son an opportunity.

We should all be so lucky.

I get that, abit wait and see won't hurt. However for the moment it look like awful treatment of someone who's erved the club with distinction as man and boy

I wonder what the pay off will be for those Debenhams workers who have been made redundant with 40 yrs service in. Poor buggers.
Terrible times we are living in, money is tight and the whole country is suffering.
I feel sorry for the lad but it's happening where ever you turn.

Absolutely spot on this. It’s unlikely that any of them will get a big press release or as big a payoff as Cooke. It’s happened at SAFC loads. When McCarthy was here and he told Micky Gray To gohome for turning up in his Ferrari!
