Kirchhoff left German giants Bayern Munich to join Sunderland in January, signing a one-and-a-half year deal with the Wearsiders. That contract now has left than a year left to run and, after demonstrating his quality by helping the club avoid relegation last term, it is no surprise that Sunderland are desperate to tie him down on a new long-term deal. Tentative discussions have already been held between the club and Kirchhoff’s representatives and, while nothing has been agreed as yet, the midfielder is convinced the situation will be resolved and he will stay. “I don’t want to talk too much about contract details,” said the 25-year-old. “But I can imagine staying here at Sunderland, I feel good here and I would like to stay. “I think we will find a solution. “There are always two sides - the club would like me to stay and I feel good here. “It’s a good situation for both of us, and I am sure we will find a solution.” Kirchhoff missed Sunderland’s first three pre-season games with a calf problem he suffered during the club’s training camp in Austria earlier this month, but returned to action last night and played the full 90 minutes as the Black Cats beat French side Dijon 3-2 in Evian-les-Bains. He said: “I took a hit on my calf in Austria and had some problems with the muscle and wasn’t able to train and missed the games because of that injury. “I started training on Tuesday with the team, I missed a couple of weeks but it is okay now and I don’t have any problems. “It wasn’t a big injury, it was just the muscle was tight. We will take care of it as we don’t want to rush anything. “It was good for me to get back into training and into a match like this. “It was quite heavy to play a straight 90 minutes after two weeks without any training but that is what I needed to get my legs going again. “We have two weeks to go and a lot of work to be done. “The schedule is good, it was well planned and we are in a good position.”
Yes agree, this must be sorted ASAP, I'd give him at least a 3 year deal. He has been a revelation since his arrival, what always worried me about him was when he was subbed was the (lack) of quality in the replacement. In short one of the most composed midfield I've ever seen at SoL.
He was light years ahead of everyone last night, he takes, the ball comfortably lays it off with ease and enjoys a tackle, what's not to like about this guy. Get him signed up long term ASAP.
Truly next level - him and M'Vila are awesome! Get them both on deals and we're there - only niggling doubt with Kirchhoff is his injury record. If he shakes off the constant injuries he'll comfortably be a £20m player within a season! Can you imagine if him and M'Vila are both in our midfield for the entire season for a purchase outlay of less than £6m? Easily £40m worth of players. GET THEM SIGNED!!
3 year extension and get it done in the next couple of weeks. The lad really impressed after his mare of a start.
some players make the game look easy ,this man is one of them players he seems to cover ground with a stroll ,great player
While there's a thread about him can we clear it up, is it Kirk-hoff or Kirch-off? It annoys me when I'm not sure how to say our own players' names.
I think it's Kirsh-hoff mate. Presuming it said the same way as Gustav Kirchhoff who was also German.
