Well it looks like Simon King is on trial at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and played the full 90 minutes in a pre-season for them. I know the majority of us spoke out hoping that the new manager was going to re-sign him but I guess it's a little out of the question. Why did we let him go if he is getting back to fitness now? We stuck through with him during his 3 years of injury so why couldn't we at lead offer him a year more? http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline/sport/2012/july/16/simon_king.aspx?
I'm guessing it was his wages. There is no doubt he was our highest paid player and I guess Hess and Scally decided that they couldn't afford to keep him when there is no certainty as to how many games he will play. King was one of the best players this club has had in some time and I still maintain the belief that if he remained fit, he would be playing Championship football by now. A really nice bloke off the pitch and an amazing player on it, but I do see the reasoning behind releasing him. Best of luck to him, I really hope he can get his career back on track and I hope Grant Holt has left his pocket
Maybe it was a case of enough is enough, 3 years with no real first team football and was maybe too much of a gamble to keep him on. If he stayed with us and broke down in pre-season people would be up in arms about how much of a risk he was. Good luck to him in the future and has sadly had the best years of his career ruined by a horrible injury.
I would have loved for him to be kept at the club and the fact that they gave Kingy the impression that he was going to be offered a pay as you play deal only to find out he had been released via twitter was awful. We should offer him a new deal just as an apology, and while we're at it make him the captain. Long Live The King!
I can imagine him signing up there and at the end of next season moving to a team higher up in England who are higher up the footballing pyramid than us. It really is a shame and I hope we aren't going to be regretting not keeping him on as the season ticks on.
doesnt mean he's signed a contract, maybe we've got him booked to come back on trial who know. all i can say is best of luck to the lad and hope he can see out till retirement without any more injury set backs!!
We are stupid to let him go after all the time he was injured we stuck by him he comes back and we let him go what a shame, I have a feeling he will do well where ever he goes.
sorry to correct you - but I believe that King showed he was back close to his best. He was reinstated after we had lost 5 league games in a row in mid season. We then lost only one of the next 7 - then Frampton gets back from injury, King gets dropped and we go on to get ONLY 16 points from the last 36 ( not good enough for a team aspiring for promotion .) Although my dislike for Frampton is documented - I will appreciate that the results of those last 12 games were not entirely his fault - BUT why did Hess persevere with him just because he was captain - Hess didn't show the same favour to Flitney - why - because Gazza proved he was better - exactly what King was proving over Frampton. As much as I loved Hess as a player, he made too many mistakes as a manager - and his tactics probably did not get the best out of the available squad - it appears that his retention as director of football may cost us in the loss of King as a Gills player.
Good luck Kingy! Still reasonably young (for a defender) - no reason why he can't rebuild his career and still maybe make the Championship someday. Huge shame he's no longer at Gills... maybe there was too much pressure on his recovery in some ways, at Gillingham. We all remember him being a world-beater in 08/09... maybe too much pressure on him to instantly be that good again, as soon as he got any kind of run in the team.
