I reckon Yann Kermorgant is the best header of a ball, that i have seen at Charlton since Matt Tees...Views anyone?

Well I was very impressed with his heading today, for all his efforts he deserved a share of the spoils but it wasn't to be, next game we'll see.

Tees was immense but Kermogant leads the line better and creates more for others.

Others who could head and lead the line.

Eddie Firmani - the best of the lot, only 5 10 with calves like thighs he could really jump. Changed a relegation bound team int promotion challengers

Cliff Holton 36 when he saved Charlton in 1966. He changed an entire team of layers from themselves. His first game was a 4-1 win at Ipswich when we were bottom and down. 3 in the first 15 mins and Peacock direct from a corner. Wish he had come in October we might have gone up.

Ron Saunders another fine header though H Gregories centres knocked him over they were so fierce.

Arthur horsfield a great line leader with a good head and guile Never missed a game in 3 years and 12 goals in a sason mostly at centre half on year. Highly dependable and Hales perfect foil.

Sir Clive, more on than ground than in the air quick and suberb at getting the best out of mid field with his lay offs

Andy hunt solid in the air and could play all day on his own up front. 19 away goals in one season says it all and mostly as alone striker!

Leaburn and Pearson Not many goals for tall men but loads from their inselfish lay offs with the head.

Ray Treacy. With Tees a dynamic pairing of steel and guile.

    From the opposition.

John Charles. Boy could he play and could he head a ball. What ajump saw picture of his head on te ball with the goalies hand on the same ball. The goalie was more than a foot off the ground and his arm was stretched above his head. How high off the ground was Gentleman John!!!!!!!!!

Alex Dawson for PNE a hatrick of headers at The Valley in a 3rd round cup tie in the 60's. We lost 3-2.

All these player s lit up my life. and all very very good headers of a ball.

Good thread GMR and a lovely nostalgic post, 56 years.

He really did win a high percentage of the balls he went up for.

My main worry about him is the amount of heavy duty tackling he's having to endure, not all of it terribly fair. He got no protection at all from the referee yesterday and wasn't moving well when he came off.

I think yesterday we saw a bit of the wrong side of Kermit though.

Slight wack in the face when we had a throw in during the second half (when it was 5-0), then seemed to want to have an argument with a few Preston players about the incident (which could have kicked off) after Waggy was fouled a few mins later

Yes I saw that but it's good to see the players sticking up for each other in these instances.

Powell was fuming at their frst goal. Thoght Kermo was elbowed in a challenge a few moments earlier. Dyer had to take over talking to the fourth official as Powell was close to losing it. The water bottle felt the full force of his left foot when they scored. To be honest Kermo is getting battered a bit. I think he's a great signing..good on the ground as well as strong in the air.

The amount of times he wins a header in a difficult/awkward position and sends it straight to one of ours or puts it in a dangerous position is remarkable.

Agreed he got no protecion yesterday though, and I do worry slightly that it'll lead to him kicking off in the future!

Thank you 56. I didn't know you cared. But are you referring only to heading ability or to my posts as well?

Matt Tees was a strange header of the ball. He seemed to get up there before the defenders and float in the air until the ball arrived.

One of the best headers of the ball i can remember in my time of supporting Charlton was King Arthur Horsfield.Agree Matt Tees was superb in the air as was Ray Treacy, for a small man.

Paddy Powell scored with a header once. He was so proud of his goal he ran across in front of the fans pointing to his head.

Yes Matt Tees and Eddie Firmani both hovered like humming birds. Thers was one Matt'scored
' at Highbury where he seemed to be there hanging for ages. It hit the underside of the bar and over th line and back out. Someone punted the ball out and Wee Georgie Armstrong ran 60 yds to score. Bob Wilson said after Matt scored but instead of 1-1 we lost in 3rd round of cup January 1969. I m still annoyed as Arsenal were top f Div 1 and we were yop of Div 2.

CAFC 4 - 3 Brighton - still my favourite game - he hung on the fencing like a human fly afterwards.
