Saw him live twice, once at the Royal Court when I was 10 and I thought my dad was going to die laughing, and two years ago when I left the theatre with mascara running down my face and my sides had split Really sad news! Rest in peace, Doddy!
Never saw him, but people who I know that did said he was brilliant. He apparently played one of the seaside resorts, can't remember which one, and had to be asked to leave the stage by the management as he had done over 5 hours with no sign of letting up. Fans used to take thermos flasks and packed lunches when they went to see him. Now it's a massive arena and you are lucky if a comedian performs for about an hour and a half.
I saw him at Whitley Bay Playhouse about ten years ago and he was tremendous. He had the entire audience, of all ages, in the palm of his hand. No smut, no swear words, just pure wit. One of the greatest comedians, no doubt. RIP Doddy.
Very approachable man even during the height of his fame, done a lot for charity(, particularly cancer charities), was born in lived in and died in his family home in Knotty Ash. RIP Doddy lad.
I never saw him bit my mum and dad did at the floral in New Brighton,he actually made the joke about asking the audience if they has brought a packed lunch. He wasn't joking started 7.30 finished at 11.30 pm.As been said no need for swearing,a lot of his jokes he'd used before but it was how he delivered them that made them funny.A true master of his craft.. R.I.P Doddy ' If i'd have known I was going to live this long ,I would have taken care of myself'
Dodd do doh don't dey doh. A titan of his profession, and kept several oxygen thieves in the Inland Revenue in a job for a few years.
Press hack noise today that by marrying his partner so close to his actual death, he may have deprived the Inland Revenue of a sizeable chunk of "death duty" . God I hope this is true.
