has faced more shots than any other Premier League keeper so far this season. He has been excellent for us for many years and I think it's slightly unfair that some of the people on here are suddenly saying he's not good enough on the basis of some very tough games.

I think keepers who are being beaten at their near post, and with seeming ease - and that's twice now in just four games - are quickly going to attract criticism, even if the rest of their play maybe doesn't deserve it.

It's amazing that people have quickly forgotten how he's saved two pens already against the top two sides.... <doh>

Excellent keeper, just give it time and things will click <ok>

He is a bloody awful keeper...does nobody remember the Niemi era? Davis isn't a fraction of the quality we had with Niemi!

You're absolutely right Oli_BN1, but it can't be denied that he looks a little less confident than he has been looking for the last few seasons. To state the obvious - he's human. And the last time he performed on this particular stage he and his Sunderland team didn't cover themselves in glory.

A good keeper doesn't become a bad one overnight [stating the obvious again]. He's lacking confidence because his defence aren't dealing with attacks as confidently as they were only 12 months ago, and he's got the best seat in the house to realise it. Without making too much of it, this defensive frailties have to be resolved at some point and really the sooner the better, starting with next week.

He's doing well in the Fantasy League :p

That's a hard standard to live up to. I don't expect Davies to be breaking his neck coming out to challenge for the ball :p

    Against Arsenal
1st goal - should have stopped initial shot from Gibbs
2nd goal - great free kick up and over wall but was not right in the corner. He would be disappointed to have not got close to it.
3rd Goal - Poor from the defense to give Gervinho that much time but Davis should of come out further to close the near post angle.
4th Goal - deflected at pace, would have taken a worldy to keep it out.
5th goal - did cover near post this time.
6th goal - shot saved but straight back in the danger zone, this is one of the worrying parts and happens all too often.

I think the face slap emoticon indicated that he was joking about the pen saves, and he infact realised they were terrible pens.

RVP's would have been hailed as brilliant if it hadn't been saved.

Are people seriously saying they would replace Davis with Gazza or Cropper?? Haha!! Ye why not, let throw the untried kids straight in at the deep end <doh>

I has saved us on so many occasions over the years and now you want to discard him after a poor game, which in hindsight everyone was poor in?

Besides, he can't be sold/new player in now; so either put up with it, support him and the team, and shut up; or don't bother going!

I have been saying for a long time that I think we need a replacement for Kelvin. Yes he has been good for us and has had some amazing games(Leeds).

Our defence is another major concern and it has been for quite some time as well. Defenders who are worried about their keeper will be more likely to panic than those with complete confidence in theirs. I have a hunch that we let Martin leave on loan because we were expecting to sign a CB. Not that I am saying Martin is better than what we have, In the same way that defenders need to have confidence in their keeper the keeper needs the same in his defence.

Kelvin has earned his attempt at stepping up to the top league but if he isn't up to it we have no ready made replacement as of yet so just have to get behind him and hope that he can deliver more times than he doesn't.

You should sign David James, then you'd stay up easily.

And we did! But yes I take your point. I'm certain we had a few other targets for centre-back which didn't come off. It was telling that Adkins denied our interest in Yoshida and then we signed him. If you ask me we were talking to him, but had higher priority targets, then we obviously had to go back in for him.

I'm sure most people agree that the lack of defensive signings was the biggest disappointment of the window (notwithstanding the good signings in other areas).

He's been at fault for too many goals this season, 3 yesterday. Unfortunately he is not premier league standard, but at this moment he's the best we got.
