I watched Solly closely today - he is to football captaincy what Diane Abbott is to MENSA. He doesn't cajole. He doesn't organise. He doesn't shout or lead by example. Being polite, he is also struggling big time with his own form. If we had a squad his place would be under threat by now. He totally failed to close down his man and stop the supply of crosses today. Jason Pearce is the obvious replacement. The ex Wigan skipper is everything as a leader that's Solly isn't. Not only that, he is in immense form this season. Leave Chris to concentrate on getting back to what he is good at - being a full back. Captaincy isn't for him.
A sensible thing that Bexleyboy once typed in another place (early last season) was that Jason Pearce should be made Captain. I guess that similar opinions were aired here as well before I joined up. I've nothing against Chris Solly, a great servant to the Club. But I remember agreeing with BB at the time.
Do captains really matter in football? Getting the little armband isn't stopping Pearce from talking and organising
No, but I don't think the other defenders are listening to him as much as they should, otherwise our defensive would be more solid. I've noticed him telling Bauer where to go and Bauer ignoring him.
Some captains bark orders whilst others have the respect of the dressing room and management - Solly falls in to the latter. A successful side will have several leaders in the side. My criticism of Solly as captain is he seems exempt from being dropped when he needs to be managed carefully.
