Gus Poyet is confident the best transfer decision he has made during his time at Sunderland to date was not to sell Lee Cattermole.

The 26-year-old midfield enforcer looked to be on his way out of the Stadium of Light in January when, with Liam Bridcutt arriving from Poyet's former club Brighton, Stoke made a move for him.

The Uruguayan thought long and hard about a man who had effectively been discarded by predecessor Paolo Di Canio, but having sought the counsel of owner Ellis Short, decided to keep him, and has since reaped rich rewards for his faith.

Id be gutted if we left us but id love to see him get a move to a top club so people can appreciate how good he really is. Hes the most underrated player on the planet and could easily play in europe and for England

Hed be perfect for Liverpool and England just playing in front of the back 4 doing his thing and letting Henderson Sterling and Sturridge do theirs.

Cattermole is another reason I have no interest in the National Team ......... when 'weak as piss' kids get in before him because of their nice haircuts. It's a f**ing disgrace.

We can but hope that Woy will realise that Catts is a class above Colback and gives Lee a chance and gets him into the England squad. It shouldn't matter who you play for.If you are good enough for your club and playing well, you should have a chance.

Measure the value of Cattermole to us by the game against Spurs last season, 5-1 loss but we fell apart and shipped 4 goals once GP had subbed him.

From Monty through Dave Watson to SKP ......... no chance of their rightful chance while ever they stayed at Sunderland.

Cats ready for Stoke - Lee
    Published: 01 October, 2014
    by Oscar Chamberlain
Cattermole focused on achieving first league win.
Midfielder Lee Cattermole has no doubts that Sunderland are heading in the right direction.
The Black Cats have lost just once in the Barclays Premier League since the start of the season, and the midfielder says they will remain focused in order to get that first league win.
We are consistent and we look tough – I don’t think anyone is going to get any easy game against us
    - Lee Cattermole
“It is always important to pick up your first league win, but let’s not start building pressure on ourselves because if you look at the team it is clear we are heading in the right direction," he said.
“We will keep going and we also owe them [Stoke] one for knocking us out of the Capital One Cup.”
Manchester United currently sit seventh in the Barclays Premier League table and a win for Gus Poyet’s side against the Potters could see them move level on points with the 20-time top-flight champions.
And Cattermole continued by hailing the team’s defensive reliance, explaining that they will not yield to any opposition.
“We are consistent and we look tough – I don’t think anyone is going to get any easy game against us.
“The way we are playing will stand us in good stead and soon enough these draws are going to start turning into wins.
“We are a few games unbeaten and there aren’t many teams like that in the Barclays Premier League, there are a lot of freak results but every week we have looked solid so we will keep building.”

Can't argue with the facts you mention,Smug, but can you give a valid reason why??I can't see why Sunderland players don't get a fair crack-of the whip when it comes to the lads playing for England. How did Colback get picked for the squad as soon as he left us???

No idea mate, it's happened time and again.

Dave Watson was hoyed the odd cap when he was at Sunderland, as soon as he arrived at Man City he became 'indispensable'.

England's midfield was gutless ........ Gerrard shuffled his miserable face, onto the pitch, like a Scouser in the queue for his methadone <doh>

Tom Cleverley as a backup? Fabian Delph picked before Catts? Delph was terrible in every game I saw him play on TV last season.

I personally think Catts is one of (if not the) most under-rated player at the club (By opposition - not by most on here - although Baz thinks he's rubbish - says all you need to know about Baz really!!)

I have rated catts for a lot longer than some on here and stated how important I thought he was to us. He captains the team without the armband. He has an occasional bad games but they are few and far between and his discipline appears to be much better than it was - although it'll be interesting to see him against Hull where Bruce will send out players to dive and try to get him booked and sent off as has been their tactic against us a few times recently!!

As far as England goes - pretty much like smug said, I don't give a **** about the national team when they keep picking the ****e that's out there irrespective of form. Kevin Phillips - still the only english player to win the euro golden shoe, and still didn;t get picked for the world cup. Adam Johnson's form was amazing for around 10 or 11 games on the trot - best winger in the country - yet Andros "1 goal 1 assist" Townsend get's picked ahead of him?!?!? Not really a surprise that his form dipped afgter that is it?

One thing for sure.....Catts wouldn't have stood 10 yards off him.....would have probably still been following Pirlo on their team bus after the match...lol
