Keeper set to sign QPR deal By Paul Warburton Jun 13 2011 0Share Add a comment Recommend Radek Cerny Image 2 RADEK Cerny was so keen to add a year to his current contract with QPR â the 37-year-old keeper was even willing to fly back to west London from holiday this week to sign the new deal. But manager Neil Warnock assured the former Spurs gloveman it would still be waiting for him when he reported back for training at the beginning of July. Warnock said: "Radekâs been great back-up for Rangers â and he deserves this extension to his contract. "It says something he was willing to come all the way back here to sort it now. But Iâve told him he needs to enjoy the break, and he can sign when he gets back." However, after Heidar Helgusonâs extension last week, Cerny is the last of the current squad to get new terms. Warnock added: "All player business now will focus on new signings. Everyone here already has existing contracts that will take care of them for next season." This just keeps getting better and better. We were linked with some good young keepers and now we're left with this hapless flapper. Add to that the extensions to Ramage and Helgs and the quote "All player business will now focus on new signings" means we must be holding onto all the rest of the Ch'ship standard Premiership cannon fodder to make up the bulk of the squad. It really isn't turning out the way I had seen it developing. What a load of Boll*cks.
He's played in the Prem, and did OK. It's a few years ago, but he's still a decent keeper. Any 'names' we brought in wouldn't have been happy to sit on the bench behind Paddy, and tbh this wasn't a big problem position for us. Sounds like the issue of keeping the players he wants is done - let's see what now happens regarding new players. If this is accurate, it's another example of how good Neil is at working with players. He would have known that the current squad would pretty much all have been worried about their place in next season's squad, so he settles the current staff right away, by assuring the players he wants to keep. good management skills there. I'm still waiting for the transfer news, but I can see a plan and process in all of this......
Morning Swords, didn't that 'hapless flapper' get the golden gloves a few seasons back? I think that is harsh. Agree not as good as Kenny. Also agree that shouldl have done better with the Leeds 1st goal but no keeper was going to save their fluked second. Reasonable backup I would have thought seeing as no top notch keeper is going to be happy to be backup??
Not too worried by this one, decent back up and Kenny will remain first choice. I agree that we need other areas strenghtening. Also these contracts we have given are all just 1 year contracts. I think this is good business. 3 players who have played at the top level, just squad members but will have a bit of experience to pass on.
Dont get the good back up theory he was rubbish against Leeds and at 37 we needed somebody younger and hungry to put pressure on Paddy, still underwealmed
just because Radek has agreed a year's extension doesn't mean that NW hasn't got someone else on his radar. It may just be that someone could be a tad too expensive at this time. Have faith in NW - we have come on leaps and bounds in the relatively short time (or by our standards a very long time) since he has ben in charge
I knew that one would come up! The key there is "a few seasons back" and hes 37 now. I thought he was decent back up too until I seen him play v Leeds and it all came flooding back just how limited he is. The lack of ambition is made more and more apparent each time we give a Football League player a Top Flight contract.
Don't see what the problem is. We knew this deal was in the pipeline and everybody at the club has said that Cerny was key to Kenny this season. Yes he's not as good as kenny but is good back-up.
IMO he played very well against Watford. Ok against Leeds he made a poor mistake, and has made some worse mistakes in the past (that Leicester one still hurts), but he's alot better than Ikeme at least
The thought of Cerny and Connolly playing in the same team in the Premiership is giving me nightmares.
You're having nightmares and Swords is terrified; you'll have to start following a more gentle sport, like ice hockey.
And there was me doubting Eccles' word... He promised Neil he could keep his best players (wowie) and now he's topped that. No need for transfers-in, we can keep our worse players too !!
