The massive Keeneland September Yearling Sale gets underway later today with a select session of 219 yearlings commencing at 12pm local time (5pm UK time)

The sale runs from 9th to 21st September (13th is the only day with no horses selling) and 3,908 yearlings are catalogued. Traditionally the best horses are offered in "Book 1" which covers the first four days of the sale, though that is not to say that stars cannot come out of the later sessions - Group 1 winning two year old sold from "Book 3" last year.

Last year 7 yearlings topped $1million and the 2,516 horses sold generated turnover of more than $219million.

Obviously there are far too many horses for me to go through and provide you with an assessment of the pedigrees! However, better judges than me have been through the sale and have flagged up the following horses to note during the first four days:

Four horses topped the $1million mark in the first session last night:

Hip 19 filly Medaglia d’Oro/Flying Passage – Flaxman Stables (Niarchos family) - $1,500,000
    Hip 80 filly Malibu Moon/Hollywood Story – Northwest Stud - $1,350,000

    Hip 61 colt War Front/Guide – M V Magnier (for Coolmore) - $1,000,000

It has not been decided if the War Front colt will go into training in Europe or the USA yet, but the Medaglia d’Oro filly will definitely come to Europe.

Europeans made their presence felt, signing for horses:

    Shadwell – 7
    John Ferguson (Darley) – 4
John McCormack (Irish agent) – 2
Hubert Guy (French agent) – 2
    Demi O’Byrne (Coolmore) - 1
Grove Stud (Irish breeze up consignors) – 1
Hugo Merry (Irish agent) – 1
    M V Magnier (Coolmore) – 1
    Juddmonte – 1
Friarstown Stud (Irish breeze up consignors) – 1

Session 2 gets underway at 5pm our time

He's probably buying his new intake ;)

An American buyer, Mandy Pope, bought the $2.2million filly

You're very welcome. I'm sure I bore some folks rigid at times, but I take my responsibility to educate you all on bloodstock matters seriously ;)

Still lots of European buying action going on, you can catch up with the results so far here
