Hull's broadband monopoly to end as KCOM face new competition from Connexin The first homes will be connected to the new alternative broadband supplier, Connexin, by the end of the year… If there is a similar thread please pop this in. At a time where we are all eagerly awaiting the white smoke and can finally crack open a bottle or two of pop with the news that we have at last new owners, I’m hoping for another change in this city. The day Kcom finally lose their hold on the monopoly in our city. I’m old enough to remember dial up and how slow it was, also the buffering when trying to watch a film was so annoying, the 8 year wait to download something. When it was offered where I lived I paid top dollar to get so called super fast broadband, 5g my fat hairy arse. It’s so ****ing slow it’s took half an hour to write this, films on my fire stick freeze so many times while trying to watch the movie.last week I tried to ring them, “ you are number 12 in the queue “ 2 ****ing hours later I managed to talk to someone. He asked me to turn off the modem and wait 15 minutes. Said it will reboot and everything will go back to factory settings. If it still persists to call back. I told him are you ****ing kidding me I’ve waited 2 hours to speak to him no way I’m going to sit on the phone another 2 hours. He checked my line told me there was nothing wrong so it was probably the modem that was faulty and they’d send some one with a new one….. I’m still waiting!!!!!!!!!!!! The worse firm in this city by a ****ing country mile….. good job we have an aerial and can watch the complete ****e on the telly these days ……rant over !!!! For now..
I have never had a problem with KCom I was the first fibre Lightstream customer in Thorngumbald, and its bloody brilliant, every time I’ve had a problem I’ve rang got through quick and sorted, you get what you pay for and I’ve had BT here and it’s ****ing ****, have to talk to a barely speaking English Indian in Mumbai, and Connexin is the same price as Kcom without the customer service, you wait until you have a problem. You must be unlucky.
As I recall PLT is the nearest to what we have as a broadband expert, but it’s a while since he worked at KCOM.
My experience also. Great service if a little overpriced. Far better than the stories you hear of other internet providers. I'm also a little confused about the 5g comment. Do KCom even offer that?
I know a few people that hate Kcom because of the monopoly, and between them, they must have tried every alternative going, and from conversations where they still slag of Kcom, it's clear that the alternatives are not as good.
Maybe you used the wrong terminology when you said "superfast", cos what you want is Ultrafast Fibre to the home on Lightstream. Not sure what they call it exactly now but, that's the one that gives you the faster speeds. KCOM are not perfect but they do employ a hell of a lot of people in the Hull area, and without them the economy would suffer. A comparable city served by BT might give you more broadband options as lots of others resell their access, but they have fewer buildings with fibre access and way fewer local jobs. To save on bandwidth costs KCOM also used to cache a lot of films etc locally so you can stream from their copy rather than the internet. I think it's Akamai CDN, which you can read about on the web if interested.
I used to about 5-10 years ago, but then Unlimited contracts stopped being offered which was a pain. They are back now which is good, hopefully to stay. Now I just have 100gb+ phone contract and 300mb unlimited lightstream for my home server/mesh. The lightstream serves the whole house and my automated media downloads whether my phone is in the house or not, so this works best for me. As previously stated, the uptime is almost constant and speed consistently stays at 300mb unlike other service providers where performance is unreliable.
