Looks like KCOM's Fibre network has gone down from about 6pm tonight, first outage in quite a while. KCOM won't be happy as MS3networks have just laid a huge competing fibre 10Gb/s network across West Hull and new rival companies are now becoming available inside the Hull boundary.
Are these fibre networks providing fibre to your front door or is it still copper to a green box somewhere?
MS3 network is full fibre to your property, if you walk on the paths in west Hull around Willerby Road, Priory Road, Spring Bank West, Maplewood estate and into Willerby you will see the they have been dug up and a tarmac strip has been laid over the network's fibre cabling. You can see MS3 network branded manhole and moleshot covers dotted around the paths as well. MS3 are providing the infrastructure but they only sell wholesale data packages to ISPs who will then offer residential packages to consumers. I'm paying a fortune to KCOM, it's not down in my area but given how much streaming/gaming our house does, I really need to look at getting a better package in the current climate.
I hope everyone will, given time and counselling, recover from the trauma of being without broadband for half an hour.
Have a look at the Flex account ST, if you get any benefits you can apply for it. Just tried it to see how much it'll cost me and it works out to half price. I've just got a new contract on my phone so can't get it yet.
I don't get any benefits at all, my wife gets child benefit for the two little ones, but that's it. Is that through KCOM?
Yes mate, they quoted £14.99 per month where it's normally £29.99. Try it with your wife's benefit, it might be ok.
If everyone down a street switches from KCOM to new MS3 cables are KCOM obliged to take down their old telegraph poles?
Kcom is ****e and it's ridiculously expensive, but then they can charge that seen as there's no alternatives
This used to be the case, but Connexin are rolling a new fibre network in Hull and MS3 are investing serious cash in the West Hull fibre roll out. KCOM now has real competition arriving (and about time!). if you look on the KCOM website, they are now offering £10 a month off the full 24month term on the full fibre 175Mbs, 500Mbs and 900Mbs packages. So you can get the 175mbs package for £34.99 per month instead of £44.99 per month, but you have to factor in a CPI + 3.9% increase every March with these 2 year contracts. I am currently paying £44.99 per month for the 175Mbs package but my contract ends in February so I am weighing up the options.
I used to slag KCom off so much when I lived in Hull. When I moved to Australia I realised I didn’t have it so bad. Until 3 years ago only ADSL was available, and even now I pay the equivalent of 56 quid a month for a 50Mbps speed that never goes above 35Mbps. I don’t live in a major city like Sydney or Melbourne, but I don’t live in the sticks either. It was always really frustrating the monopoly that KCom held over hull though, every time you’d see adverts for these great broadband deals when we got half the service for double the price in Hull
