That Mick McCarthy is set to be named as new Town boss, i am gutted but will obviously back him. I think he may be ok for the short term but long term most deffo not!
I wanted Curbs from the bunch the bookies had as favourites (assuming ‘arry would never happen), but I suppose I’m happy enough with this. The EADT story reckons O’Connor will be Assistant Manager with Matt Holland coaching. I’m definitely less worried about this one than the last two. Keano I’d had down before he joined as a potential Bryan Robson mark 2 – decent couple of seasons in the first job then nothing. Jewell had been a disaster with two clubs, including his most recent one. You could only console yourself that they had got teams promoted. With McCarthy I’m not putting up the bunting, but for once I’m confident he’ll improve us. Two of his obvious biggest problems (of quite a few) will be the attitude of our useless, deadbeat players and re-building a shambles of a squad. I’m sure he’s up to the former, but I wasn’t sure about the latter, so I had a snoot at his Wiki page: ++++On 21 July 2006, McCarthy was appointed manager at Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers,[8] replacing Glenn Hoddle who had departed a fortnight before. The Midlands club faced an uncertain future after having to sell the majority of their first-team players, though despite this situation, McCarthy promised Premier League football at Molineux within three seasons. From this awkward position, McCarthy managed to collect together a team from the club's youth ranks, and some lower league signings, and free transfers. Despite the lack of expectations, the team managed to make the promotion play-offs in McCarthy's first season,++++ He got them up in three years and kept them there for three years.
Think like most people I can hardly say I'm thrilled, but I do think he will do a good job for us, and the reported appointment of Holland as a coach may be signs of longer term thinking.
Its hardly the most exciting appointment but its not a disasterous one either. He comes across as having that approachability factor that I think we all feel is a major attribute for our club but is also not shy of being strict and will not be overridden by players. Hopefully taking the good points of the Jewell and Keane styles but with less flaws. It will be interesting to see what he thinks of our team. Are they just lacking confidence or do we genuinely lack talent. I used to think it was the former now Im not too sure. The big question for me is how well he is going to be supported by ME and whether SC has learnt his lessons of being a back seat chairman.
are you in any way concerned that he has been used to losing over the last 18 months? its not a good habit to get into as your team know well. his record overall is good in the championship but does the 'losing habit' worry you?
Worryingly similar to the two previous managers' CVs. Yes he's had successful promotions, as had Keane and Jewell, but he has been managing for 20 years so you'd think the law of averages would state that he had to have some good seasons out of that lot. Aside from that, I can't stand the man. Extraordinarily unimpressed if it happens. On the plus side, it hasn't happened, yet.
I'm with you Lancs, i cant stand the man either and i don't think he is even a good manager. Poor uninspiring appointment if it happens!
and who would you guys who dont like mick see as an inspiring choice? owen coyle or curbishley? out of all of the managers linked i wouldn't call any of them inspiring but McCarthy for me fits all of the criteria. he has recent success in the play offs, has a good record of finding good lower league players, gives youth a chance and he will undoubtedly fire a rocket up the squads ass.
WOOHOO WHOOP WHOOP WHOOP!!!!!!! Mick McCarthy's BARMY ARMY! At last we got ourselves a proper manager!
Exactly KIO. Thankfully it's not a done deal There is an interesting Keane / McCarthy / Holland World Cup 2002 undercurrent to all of this.
****ing hell Yorkie! The guy hasn't been appointed yet and you're already slagging him! In the dire situation we find ourselves in and with the divided dressing room with prima-donnas ruling the roost who else would be any better? I have said all along that MM is the best possible appointment and if he brings in Terry Connor and Matt Holland that will be far better than we couild have ever realistically imagined. This isn't a time for a young thruster who is wet behind the ears or for a bloke that was good 5 years ago but has done nothing since!
1 Scott Loach 2 Elliott Hewitt 3 Aaron Cresswell 4 Luke Chambers 5 DJ Campbell 6 Danny Higginbotham 7 Carlos Edwards 8 Guirane N'Daw 9 Jay Emmanuel-Thomas 10 Michael Chopra 11 Lee Martin 12 Arran Lee-Barrett 13 Stephen Henderson 14 Jason Scotland 15 Massimo Luongo 16 Richie Wellens 17 Andy Drury 18 Nathan Ellington 19 Luke Hyam 20 Tommy Smith 21 Bilel Mohsni 22 Josh Carson 23 Nigel Reo-Coker 26 Paul Taylor 27 Daryl Murphy 28 Ronan Murray 29 Jack Ainsley 30 Joe Whight 31 Byron Lawrence 32 Cormac Burke 33 Gunnar Thorsteinsson — Cheick Kourouma Looking at that list Big Mick's got his work cut out. Perhaps he should put the whole squad up for sale as a 'job lot' and start again
Who was Paul Lambert before we appointed him? A nobody in the management world, but look what happened!
I think you are right Welly Just reading on the EADT that negotiations may have hit a stumbling block!
Equally, perhaps you should wait a little before proclaiming him the messiah! A good point, Ipswich are the last club I'd want to manage at the moment, incredibly we seem to have options. If we appoint McCarthy that would just about sum up the Evans era and another nail in the coffin of the Cobbold-era ITFC.
i think mccarthy is a better shout than curbishley would have been, but i can see why people would be put off by the appointment.
