Watching the England game last night and keeping in mind the difference Wes Morgan has made to us since his arrival got me thinking - just how good is he?

Certainly I saw nothing from the English central defenders yesterday that had me thinking wes would be out of place in that squad. Indeed for a big guy he appears to be much quicker than Cahill (and definitely Terry).

Now I'm gouing to tempt fate - let's just say we manage to get a good cup run - like Millwall and Cardiff in recent years - is it possible that Wes could just enter the Euro squad selecters considerations? - I'm old enough to remember Dave Watson the Sunderland (then in the old second division) centre-half who nobody had heard off before the cup final win against Leeds back in 1972 or 73 - he then went on to be an england fixture at a comparatively ripe old age..

All of the above could, of course, be bo**ocks if i've missed the fact that Wes is Welsh or Scottish or something else!!

Wes is Nottingham born and bred

I cant see him going euros for 1 second.

As for how good he is. He is a no nonsense centre half who what you see is what you get. We havent had a defender like that since Wayne Brown

Proud - a positive comparison to Wayne Brown is not very flattering - Wes can actually pass a ball, is twice as quick and reads the game much better - a far better comparison would be with the likes of Matt Elliott and Tags ...both of whom were internalionals!

Morgan will never be an international though. At the time it did seem strange that we was after him, we dont know if Wes can pass because so far he hasnt knocked the ball long that often. Any professional football should be able to knock the ball around 10 yards so he hasnt been tested as for his passing. He cant be any worse then Matt Mills anyway. People knocked Jack Hobbs for his distribution and then we get Matt Mills thinking he is David Beckham.

Morgan is no nonsense like Wayne Brown, yeah its simaliar to Tags and Matty but they are both club legends and its unfair to compare them

I rate Wes Morgan, i think he is a good solid def, more to the point, alot of my florist supporting work collegues, were gutted when we signed him. I think we have a really good player in Morgan, he may not be the quickest, or indeed the most technically gifted, but he gives his all in every game he plays, and that as a fan, is all i want to see from any of our players. Win, lose, or draw, but as long as they look like the give a s**t, then that's ok with me...

    Agreed

If the whole team give everything they have and still lose and will always applaud them off the pitch. You cant complain

I was really impressed with his distribution in the Derby game - he invariably found a blue shirt and not just over 10 yards - the reason he doesn't have to play 40 yard balls is that he spots the runs of midfield players far quicker than Mills does ...he also has a turn of foot - obviously he needs to sustain it but on his showings so far he has the potential to be ranked with our best in that position - which I would never have said about Hobbs (despite his youth) and certainly not about Brown ...

In the play off season Jack Hobbs didnt put a foot wrong. Especially in the play offs he was nothing short of superb in both games. I couldn't believe Sven was so fast to discard him and then we just put muppets in his place (Mee and Bruma)

Heard an interview with Chris Coleman on the radio on my way into work - he was talking about Gary Speed's sons who led the teams out in Cardiff last night for their Dad's memorial - apparently the 14 year old went into the losing Wales dressing room after the game to address the players and (to paraphrase) said "Dad always told us, do your best, that's enough. You lot did your best tonight, and that's enough". Wise words from a young man in difficult circumstances - but something that I think echoes with all genuine football supporters (i.e not the band wagon jumping plastic glory boys following the top 6 - with no real connection other than a lust for winning)
    - as long as your team gives it all on the day, that's enough.

Now I do not know the entire extent of Morgan's ability although I have seen him play a few times but to me this looks like the usual Leicester sign a player and so they have to massively overrate him because he has had a few decent performances for them. He was playing in a team that was/is fighting relegation for a reason, he wasn't snapped up prior to this for a reason as well. He's not that great, just a no nonsense centre half who will make the odd mistake which results in a goal. He NEEDS someone playing alongside him who can play the ball a bit better than him with a decent brain as well, covering when he goes in for headers and tackles and what not, if not he will then struggle.

    Shows how much you know

He has been injured for most of this season for Forest and he was named in the PFA team of the season last year

What an awful defender he must be

Josh -it's not a question of overrating - you won't have seen me on here predicting we would win the league this year etc - but I've not seen the same immediate impressive impact from a signing since Martin O'Neil signed the likes of Lennon, Izzet and Matt Elliott - and I've been watching Leicester for over 40 years. The other aspect is that England currently (and for some time now) have a bunch of very ordinary footballers - every other team in our Euro group won away last night - whilst there were a couple of encouraging cameo performances the Dutch looked as they were never out of second gear - my point is that I think there are still a number of places in the squad open for grabs and our centre-half options are all rather suspect - hence I merely pose the question about how good Wes Morgan actually is.

Guess which response I respect more??

Anyway, Fosse I understand immediate impacts but in all honesty even if he was good enough for the squad he wouldn't be picked because he is in the second tier of english football. Your right we currently have **** CBs in the England squad but I would still prefer the likes of Cahill in there than Morgan.

And gone are the days when players make there international debuts at the age of 28. The exact same thread opened up on the saints board regarding Ricky Lambert and although I believe he has a far better chance of being included in the squad, it just will not happen. Lambert is a type of player (not necessarily of the required talent) that we are desperate for in the England squad as well.

It still seems like your overrating him though, wait for him to have a bad game and then set your judgements

Too early to say how good he is, just as we didn't have the complete story on Beckford or SSL until later on in the season.
