Thoughts? It is now 2 years on.... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...rdew-proper-Saint-little-monster-Cortese.html 7
Remember this at the time...thought it was dreadfully vitriolic and over the top. Tries to portray Nicola as a dilettante when he is in fact a man with a good head for business. Berates him for laughing off suggestions he was going to Milan! Ridicules him for playing match predictor which most Saints fans would find endearing. The Echo business was a mistake admittedly. I'm sure it was stuff like this that has made Nicola very reluctant to speak openly...people seem determined to misunderstand him. He was right that Pardew has moved on and done well, but then so have we.
He said from the start he does his best to avoid speaking to the media because he despises how they twist things to suit their agenda. Wonder where he get that impression...
I want to get annoyed...but I know better really. It really is best to ignore people like Martin Samuel.
Making out that Nicola is some kind of dictator....well, Samuels' name will be first on the Cortese death list
Its over the top and typical mail. However to do this day I will say based on the information available to Cortese the decision to sack Pardew was an illogical gamble. It turned out well so fair play to Cortese but I still think based on what he knew it was a mistake which Adkins has somehow rescued. I think Cortese is great and has done a great job however he makes mistakes like the rest of us and that interview was another. Still wouldnt change him for anyone at the moment!
I'm not even going to read the article. It's on the Daily Mail so no doubt it will be poorly written and pitifully misinformed.
I recognise the sneering tone. It fits in well with the rest of that paper's output. And Cortese is a foreigner, after all!
What a fantastic article, given that Cortese's way will one day be the blueprint for how to run a football club! Someone ought to play it back to the Daily Mail for a comment! This is the kind of cheap journalism that gets England managers the sack after half a tournament. I agree with Fran about The Echo. Its not as if the Saints need The Echo or vica versa but it would be nice if they could co-operate with one another. Win win in my opinion.
Oh dear I wonder what their analysis of Cortese would be today? Surely it was an unusual piece of journalism. Quite frankly, I wonder what on earth got the mans gander up. He is obviously a fan of Pardew and we all know the Don was not!!
He barked early and completely misjudged Cortese. But there were [still are..?] a few supporters who thought [think] they knew best, and think only the worst of the best Charirman we've had, certainly in my, living memory. NC could easily depart to AC/Inter Milan and be a real asset to those clubs and others. He could go anywhere he chose in a sports business situation and bring benefits. But he chose Southampton FC because, as he says, the Saints are his baby, and he wants to take the Club all the way to the top, The Southampton Way. I think if any of us here were doubtful/critical of Cortese in the past, we're all in the converted column now.
To be fair, the Don did like Pardew, and he realises that AP turned things round. But they didn't share the same outlook, so the only recourse was a parting of the ways.
Ah well it was in the daily fail...... blah blah BBC run by left wing loonies..... blah blah britain overrun by immigrants.... blah blah commie union leaders... blah blah bring back national service... blah blah welfare scroungers... blah blah cut the public services.... blah blah cut taxes for the rich... blah blah... have I missed any of their biggoted views????
Guardian is the only decent paper for sports journalism. Some of the best articles you can read on the web are Guardian.
Don't forget that the Daily Fail publishes sensationalist weather storeies from crackpots - remember they recently said this would be the coldest May for 100 years - The annoying thing is if you just read the headlines you may think these stories come from the Met Office - and you may have guessed, I work for the Met Office.
That article boiled my piss first time around yet it made me chuckle this morning. I may just have to tweet that to him.
