In an attempt to divert attention from the slanging matches going on at the moment, I thought I'd put up a little football question that I posted a couple of years back on the old 606.

Will anyone who knows the answer from last time please hold back and refrain from blowing it, and let the newer guys (and those who didn't see it then) have a go. <ok>

    Here goes.

During a Football League game, the referee awards a goal kick and the keeper places is on the edge of his 6 yard box ready to have a thrash into a gale force wind. He runs up, and as he kicks the ball he slips over and skies it. The strong winds catch the ball and blow it over his head and into his goal with no one else touching it.

    What does the referee award?

(I wont acknowledge a correct answer from someone until a few of you have a go first <ok>)

Sparkey, believe it or not that actually happened in a Sat/Sun league game on the Marl in Grangetown (prob about 20+ years ago now). The ref at the time awarded a goal (basically an own goal) and amid the aftermath of arguing and confusion he abandoned the game as it all got, shall we say, a bit messy :D
I haven't thought about it since but off the top of my head I'd say an own goal is the right decision. Be interesting to see if I'm right or wrong.

Nice diversion btw View attachment 6200

Doesn't really matter Sussex, but let's just say yes, it did go outside the 18 yard box before blowing back. <ok>

I think its a re-take as no-one else touched the ball after it had been out of play unlikr sprakes save in play and a throw into his own net (Ball never out of play) like a throw in, someone other than the thrower has to touch the ball. (Which cocks up a goal scored from the corner flag). I think I'd better think it out again!
Ah no it doesn't a corner kick is a direct free kick so the kicker can score.

Re-take on the basis that a goal kick is an indirect free kick and the kicker cannot score directly from it. (I think)
    I'll get my coat!

Here is another sports question but Cricket. But I promise you it is relevant to Cardiff.
Who was the only man to record a hat trick of stumpings in first class cricket (3 stumpings for 3 consecutive balls)and more importantly what was his uncle famous for??
    No googling!!!

    My guess is a corner.

Playing at the Marl, don't be in goal at the river end when the tide comes in. Or at least don't try to retrieve the ball once past the goal line in a strong wind blowing towards the river.

Who did you play for H? I played for Tongwynlais in Cardiff and District for a few years. Only played at the Marl a couple of times thankfully.

Billy Waith was one of ours while I was there. Nice guy off the pitch but once in play and got upset, the red mist came down!!!!

bfb, Grange Cons on a Sat and Channel View in the Sunday League until both merged into Channel View. I grew up on or around the Marl and once you cleared the broken bottles and dog crap from the pitches it was ok. I tried not to venture too close to the river for fear of copping an air pellet :D (ah, the good old days) You get nicked for that type of prank these days :)

Billy Waith rings a bell (no pun intended) but only by name.

Another blast from the past, one of the best friends , or worst enemies you could ever make, Billy was a good journeyman fighter, who anyone with championsip pretensions had to bea\t on the way up (not an easy task <ok> Billy gave some young pretenders a rude introduction into the "real world" of pro boxing) Billy always wanted to win a 100 fights, preferably in the ring but whilst I never saw Billy start a fight outside the ring, he wouldn't move an inch out of his way to avoid one ;).

A decent defender who played football for St Josephs, he used to be the Landlord of the Crown in Llandaff North, very well thought of, raised a lot of money for charity, and one of natures gentlemen <ok>

If you throw the ball into your own net (from a throw-in) it's a corner...So I would imagine it would be a corner aswell.

Reminds me of a similar situation, if the keeper takes a goal kick and slips, the ball goes to an attacking forward, if he were to score it would only count if it left the 18 Yard box, so, I'm going with a retake of a goal kick. <ok>

Keep those educated guesses coming lads - I'll give it another hour or so before posting the correct referee decision. <ok>
