Nope, not an April Fool - jump racing will return to Windsor (last staged in 1998) from December 2024. https://www.racingpost.com/news/bri...n-to-windsor-for-2024-25-season-a3Yh24T2OM5F/
Doubt there are many on here that have seen jump racing at Windsor. I saw Alverton at Windsor, special horse
Me neither, Ron. I do recall the track is pretty close to Old Father Thames. A jumper who gets naughty and runs out risks a full dunking in the river. Horse's jockey won't think much of that if he was still on board after his mount ran out? Maybe the track was fenced-off from the river, just can't remember from my occasional visits to the track; long time ago!
Hi Stick. Yes, I remember Alverton winning the Gold Cup in ‘79- he beat my bet, Royal Mail. Then he went for the Grand National and was cantering, clear in front, coming to Becher’s for the second time. I’d backed Rubstic, and I said to my wife ..” He’s got a chance only if Alverton comes down at Becher’s.” When Alverton did fall at that fence, Rubstic battled it out with a Thomson-Jones horse (can’t remember the name) and gave me a good but very lucky win!
Bustino, something tells me that the odd jockey used to end up in the Thames after a fall. Am I right or imagining things?
My Dad said there was a particular horse, who for some reason jumped the rails and ended up in the Thames. Remembered because he did it twice. I think there used to be a reasonable hurdle race at that New Year meeting..
