3 Years ago this week Saints were celebrating winning the Johnstone Paint Cup at Wembley, beating Carlisle 4-1 with goals from Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Papa Waigo N'Diaye and birthday boy Michail Antonio. Great memory's ....
A great day out. We didn't perform well enough to get into play offs (as we started on -10) so it made the first season under Cortese a happy one. Very pleased to get a cup and trip to Wembley as a reward for Markus as sadly he didn't get to see our subsequent success.
A fantastic day out. It was my first trip to the new Wembley and to see Saints win a trophy - couldn't have been better! Amazing that we took 44,000 there, - half the stadium was just a sea of red and white! We made it our home stadium and the noise was immense! A proud day to be a Saints fan!
I saw somewhere that unofficial lay Saints took over fifty thousand. We still hold the record for taking the most fans to a single final at the new Wembley.. It was a great day out. I thought the Carlisle fans were brilliant too
For me nothing personifies the rebirth of our club like that day. The pride & passion in the city for our team shone as bright as I've ever known. If the Ajax match was the engagement party for Southampton & The Liebherrs , then this was the wedding. Hopefully in the future we shall make far more prestigious cup finals, but such is the business of football that we won't get the opportunity to see so many Saints fans attend the same game. I doubt I will see such numbers again in my lifetime and it was brilliant to be there.
Christ is it really 3 years ago? Made a long weekend of it and took the whole family up to London for the Friday /Saturday / Sunday. Stayed at Greenwich and took the tube to the game, remember it gradually filling up with more and more Saints supporters as we got closer. My memory of the day was seeing Marcus snapping away with his little camera. Great man.
ML's little smiling face, he was just one of us that day, brilliant. Sadly missed, glad he saw the start of things to come.
45,000 Fans singing 'oh when the saint' sent a shiver down my back. This is our song and nobody else should use it, spurs fans in particular !
And Liverpool. And Leeds. In fact, many teams use it. In England, in football, we're the only club supporters who can sing the traditional without changing the words.
The full version: We are trav'ling in the footsteps Of those who've gone before, And we'll all be reunited, On a new and sunlit shore, Oh, when the saints go marching in Oh, when the saints go marching in I want to be in that number When the saints go marching in And when the sun refuse to shine And when the sun refuse to shine I want to be in that number When the sun refuse to shine And when the moon turns red with blood And when the moon turns red with blood I want to be in that number When the moon turns red with blood Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call I want to be in that number When the trumpet sounds its call Some say this world of trouble, the only one we need But I'm waiting for that morning When the new world is revealed Oh When the new world is revealed Oh When the new world is revealed I want to be in that number When the new world is revealed Oh, when the saints go marching in Oh, when the saints go marching in I want to be in that number When the saints go marching in No 7
I like it when the Spurs fans give it the full throttle! Would like to see them or Chelsea play in the Europa Final against hopefully Benfica (those with long memories recall the likes of Coluna, Eusebio, Torres.) Hell, I am showing my age.
