Let's get ****ing real, Joyce? If we were in a relegation dog fight and penny-less then maybe but **** me we are a good Championship side looking to get back in the Premiership! We need an up and coming young Manager who is hungry and looking to the future, We don't want one that is looking back. If we brought Joyce back I wouldn't even bother going anymore, I'd be too ****ing embarrassed.
The Joyce talk is embarrassing. It's small time. It's emotionally driven, sentimental, nostalgic ****. It harks back to our lowest time. Yes he saved us then (many thanks) but we are totally different now. Unfortunately, the fans aren't. It would be the wrong appointment made for the wrong reasons, IMO anyway. Seems like most disagree. For what it's worth, I would prefer experience over 'up and coming'. Why take an unnecessary risk?
100% agree. I'll say it again: WE SACKED HIM IN THE BOTTOM DIVISION. I can't think of a single club in history who sacked a manager for not being good enough and then reappointed him when 2 divisions higher. Think about it people - it is ludicrous.
Joyce has picked up all the Man U methods but I agree would prefer to see manager with more experience and definitely not the 31 year old mentioned
i see where people are coming from about joyce..i dont necessarily think experience is the simple answer either, as many hjave just as much experience at being **** as they do good.. i think its just important to get the right guy, with the right attitude, who isnt a complete prick, whether hes had 20 years experience or zero, all managers where inexpereinced at one point, even ferguson and clough.
Would be happier with McClaren as manager with Barmby as assistant, with Joyce bringing through the players at our feeder club.
Spoke to someone who claimed to know him last night, and he said 'I'll tell you now, Warren is not coming'
It's the same person we sacked but not the same manager. Last time we had him it was his first job, he's since been at two of the best youth setups in the country and won a title with Antwerp. He also has a good knowledge of our existing players (Dowie admitted picking teams based on appearances before he arrived because he didn't know them ffs) as well as having a good working relationship with them. As far as the experiance goes, when you look at the experianced managers available, do any of them have more experiance of getting promoted from this division than Dowie does? (there might be, I just can't think of one with 2 promotions or more from the Championship) Any inexperianced manager (well any manager) is a gamble, I'd say it's less of a gamble to choose one that's already worked with hallf your team and got good results, and who's style must be one that suits a passing game (Koren) because he's been responsible for bringing players into the Man U team.
That's a good post. Almost anyone can be a gamble to some degree. The man should not have been sacked by us in the first place and that set his career back. He has managed to resurrect that at some very tough places and is thought very of highly at Manu. I think we should re-Joyce.
I don't think he did - looking at the Antwerp website, he managed them in their 2nd division and failed to get them promoted in both seasons despite having a whole host of Man U loanees
I can see all sides of this and some very good posts Yes we sacked Joyce in the bottom division - but we all know it was wrong to do so and he has gone on to do some good work, but has no experience at this level The problem with an experienced manager is that they are also experienced at failure (or wouldnt consider comming to us) Personally if we are going for a young manager Id like Joyce
From Wikipedia: A loan stay though at Hull City in January 1995 paved the way for a permanent deal 18 months later, so in July 1996 Joyce signed on the dotted line for Hull. He went on to play a total of 168+2 games for Hull scoring 19 goals. He soon became club captain at Boothferry Park, putting in some talisman type performances over the next two years.[citation needed] Indeed his influence at the club was so apparent that in November 1998 he was asked to stand in as caretaker manager following the departure of Mark Hateley.[citation needed] City soon made the appointment permanent with Joyce taking on the dual role of player-manager. At the time of his appointment, City were rooted to the foot of the Fourth Division table and looked to be heading out of the Football League – and into bankruptcy.[citation needed] However, under Joyce's stewardship, City staged a remarkable turnaround and achieved survival with games to spare; City fans christened this season "the Great Escape".[1] Such is the esteem with which Joyce is regarded by Hull City fans he is assured a hero's welcome every time he returns to the KC Stadium.[citation needed]
I was just going to post that - I'm sure people make up honours and success for people based on the fact 'they heard they did well'. Antwerp are a big club and he did poorly there.
What's your point? You do realise that anyone can edit wiki dont you? Anyway, I'm not disputing that Joyce is a hero - I was there at our lowest ebb in the lowest ever league crowd and the lowest EVER crowd for a competitive game (how many others on here can sqay that?) and I'll never forget what he did. That doesnt mean I think he's right for us now.
Nothing but sentimentality for me if true. There is no championship managerial experience there. I'll support them 100% if that's the choice. But I think it's a massively wrong choice. Either could be manager - but need a Brian Horton to their Phil Brown.
