I thought that he was excellent again yesterday and for me has been an unsung hero this season...the whole defence is much more solid recently with only 4 goal conceded in 6 games (3 of which were individual errors). My question is this, does everyone still think that a top class Centre Back is a priority in the transfer window and risk upsetting the balance again or should we just be buying a back up for Jose and Maya...It's pretty much accepted that we need at least one CB as we only really have Jos as an experienced back up.
We need a quality one to keep them on their toes, one that will improve the team as opposed to an average back-up player. If we keep up the watertightness of recent games though I don't think we need to break the pair up but we need a good player to step in if need be
Fonte had a dodgy start to the season but has vastly improved in the last couple of months. I am nowhere near as worried about our defence as I was, although we still need reinforcements.
I still think we need 2 centre half's. However i hope any new defender will play along side Fonte and Yosihda drops out, Still unimpressed with Yoshida.
Just to add, I think that he would be a good stand in Captain should Adam not be fit for Sunderland (hope he is, *touches wood*)
I think it just goes to show that in the Fonte - Hooiveld pairing, it was Jos who was getting most of the headlines, but it was Jose who was doing most of the quality defence work. I'm not saying Jos was poor, just that Jose was better.
Am very pleased to see a player like Fonte prove himself again. I think fans and players underestimated the step up to the PL. Always a shame when players that get you promoted have to leave or never even get to sit on the bench...glad Fonte is getting his reward for dropping a league to join us in League 1.
Yeah, I don't think Maya's particularly fantastic. Definitely good enough for the squad, but he's only a regular first team player because he has such little competition.
I can't see much cash splashing in January, but need 2 defenders (including a CB with pace) as a bare minimum. Let's hope Nicola isn't planning to be incommunicado in January.
