31 years old, sounds like he had bad knee troubles for the last few years. Sure he will look back on his career and remember the majority of his time up here fondly. Good little players for us when he was here. http://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport...why-he-s-had-to-retire-aged-just-31-1-8739117
Left cos he thought he was above us, then failed at Liverpool after 2 seasons, now he'll probably look back and see Newcastle as the best time of his career. Good player when he was here, and I'll always remember his reaction to when he scored that goal against Forest and the huge player pile on, you could tell how much getting a goal meant to him.....but he left here under a cloud and soured things with the fans, him ending up in goal at SJP and having "Jose Enrique who's in the top 6?" sung to him was just priceless!
Did love the chant vs Liverpool at the end of that season was class! Don't think he would have left had we not shown a total lack of ambition and sold all our best players. Was obviously unhappy with the board here - rightly so. Good example of why you should never publicize those type of comments though as they always come back to bite you in the arse!
I think that's why I can get over it with Enrique, he was the start of a long line of players we can hold up and say "the grass never ends up being greener" He already had his comeuppance at Liverpool and, towards the end, I felt pretty sorry for him. His move to Zaragoza came way too late. As said, he came and gave his all, I'll remember him fondly
Indeed, as was the case with Jenas's "goldfish bowl" comments!!! Yeah, it was great to rib Enrique about that, agreed though he was good when he was here, and he's not hated over here like the likes of Owen, Jenas, etc.
liked him a lot. I lost my voice the day he rolled into town with Liverpool and we sang 'we're in the top 6, we're in the top 6.... Jose Enrique we're in the top 6'... he took that in great spirits and always retained a good rapport with fans.
Personally don't blame him for leaving. We had the basis for a very good side and ended up ruining it. Which player wants to stay at a club with zero ambition. Thanks for the memories Jose.
I thought he was a good player for us. he had 4 years here and left for a good club. It was a good move for him and under Ashley there has never really been a desire for us to be overly progressive so I understand it. Wish him the best and its a shame its ended for him the way it has.
Liked him when he was here but the way he engineered the move and his comments afterwards makes me think so what.
Still don't get the rapport over him. The reason why he was ****e at Liverpool as he didn't have another player doing his job. Here he had Jonas run his arse into the ground for Enrique. Defensively suspect and just as crap as Dummett attacking wise.
Just another ex-player that's retired.... No big shakes, but, now that we have threads on ex-players retiring, the floodgates will open when Shola hangs his golden boots up.... I wont get misty eyed over him, engineered a move on his terms, for more money. Strangely enough after he went, we had a cracking season without him.
To be fair, you must have been blind to not see his talent. I have never seen another full back stop crosses as well as Enrique, simply by being able to track a winger's run and beat him over 5 yards - there was simply nowt getting by the guy over a the space of 2 or 3 seasons here. He wasn't the best at getting forward but he was absolutely fantastic defensively. Do you even know how stupid you sound saying he was "defensively suspect'?
When Shola retires I'm pilgriming it up to Newcastle to lay a black and white wreath for him at St James. #longlivethemackemslayer
Two-fold argument, Enrique used to end up further forward than gutes. Is that because he's a **** defender, or because gutes had zero speed and wanted to take the world on? He was actually a better crosser than gutes in my mind
Not difficult though! Haha! For me, Jonas knackered himself covering for Enrique and doing his job for 2 or 3 seasons. This is why Enrique looked good. Yes occasionally he looked actually good - but then so does Dummett and so did Shola. Not only did he have Jonas he also had Colo being pulled out of position almost every game covering for him as well. Rose tinted glasses but there is a reason why he was ****e at Liverpool and that is he wasn't any good. Just my opinion though. Just like certain players get constantly lambasted as being ****e but then never played more than half a game a season with no reserve football or no loan football.
