I know, it's a dead cert to go through so long as they meet his wage demands (apparently asking for 60k p/w).

I couldn't take that one. Too competitive. You have potentially 6 teams who could qualify. I'd imagine it will be Man U, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal (if as expected they sign centre backs). Liverpool and Spurs have cracking squads but Europa would be the extent of by bet with regards to Europe. (The gambler in me is saying "ask what odds" but I'll fight that urge)

  5. It annoys me when people say this is good business. It's not if we don't get to spend the cash on a replacement....

Carroll's transfer for 35m seemed like a good deal, yet in the end it wasn't because we've spent next to nothing on a replacement for him.

You dont know we wont get a replacement though, and 10 million for a player in the last year of his contract who would have soent the year unmotivated is good business. No point at all in keeping unhappy players.

Nobody is saying its good for the club on the playing side. Its fecking terrible, and worse still when you get no replacement. But 10m for a player in the last year of his contract is good business.

Haven't heard anything on SSN or BBC only newspapes and random website...

If it is true though £10 mil isn't bad for a player that only has 12 months left on his contract.

But we would have to buy replacement though (hint hint MA!)

With all that's going on, you've got to wonder how many players are actually 'happy' with the way things are just now. I know the media attention is polarising everything but it's not good. Agreed that £8-10m for a player in his final year is decent money but I'd prefer to keeping proven quality players and getting them to sign new deals by proving the ambition of the club.

  10. We should keep a hold of Enrique. Just because he'd rather be somewhere else doesn't mean we should let him go. We could use his quality.

It's not like he can just be **** for a season, he needs to keep his performances at a high level if he wants to maintain interest from the top clubs, so i expect another seasons worth of good performances from him. We should wait until we have a proper replacement lined up for him, one that we've been watching for a while and one that we're sure will fill Enrique's boots. I doubt we'll get one in of Enrique's quality but we need one that's at least solid in defense and can go forward also.

Don't let him go. Players want to leave clubs at times but they know they can't just stop playing.

That's exactly why we should let him go. He was awful in the back end of last season when his head was in the clouds about a move away.

  12. He wasn't awful at the back end of last season. He was awesome vs Chelski. He only really played awful vs Blackpool. If he's kept he'll need to keep his performances up or he'll know that interest will decline for him from the top clubs. He'll play for a transfer next season and therefore most likely play better that he has before.

Jose has some shockers at times but most games he's fantastic. Defo keep him.

The only way your theory stands up is if no one had wanted him and he had to earn a move away. He's got a club he's dying to move to in Liverpool and us pulling the plug on that would mean we get a **** season from him where he probably leaves in January anyway. He was bad in a lot of games last season, not just Blackpool. And they all came after January when he wanted out.

It'd probably be the case that he'd up his game when the spotlight's on, or against teams who have some interest in him and be ****e in the rest...if he's going on he a free at the end of a season then he's less likely to play well as he knows that clubs will come in for him as it's much lower risk than shelling out 10m for a player.

Aye but we our only ambition is to stay in the league and reduce the debts. We'd all prefer what you suggest, a club with ambition and a progressive outlook. The reality is though we are a selling club trying to shed high earners and replace them with young talent who we can sell on at a profit. We are all about turning over a profit to reduce our debt levels.

Can't agree with this SMudge, I thought Enrique had a terrific season and continued to give 100% after Jan. I think too many people have latched on to his couple of bad games in a season of 38. He was outstanding. He must have been to attract so much interest. I don't think we should do him down because he's outgrown our club, or try and change what he did for us. he has been an outstanding player in his time here and he should be commended for the committment he has shown when many other would have jumped ship.

I admire him staying on with us until now and thank him for his efforts but in my view he was very sloppy in some games towards the end of the year, when he knew he wanted to leave the club. Pulling the plug on the Liverpool deal would not guarantee a good season from him, he'd be very angry at the club and wouldnt be performing at his best IMO.

  19. No i think you've got it completely the wrong way round. If he was unhappy here, and no one wanted him, he'd most likely just stop caring all together and stop playing well or drop his work rate because of lack of interest. However, if he knew that clubs were keeping eyes on him, he'd make sure he impressed them by playing well and to the best of his ability so he'd have a bunch of clubs ready to sign him at the end of the season.

But for him to be here, we'd have to have cancelled the deal with Liverpool, he'd hate us for that. He wouldnt need to impress anyone because he knows Liverpool will wait for him and get him on a pre contract next January anyway.
