I'm watching the Scotland v Australia match and Jordan Rhodes scored with a nice header. Interestingly, he has linked up well with new Norwich signing Robert Snodgrass. Snoddy has looked very lively and has put some great balls into the box. I still think that we could do with signing a new striker and we should take a gamble and sign Rhodes! If Grant Holt was to get injured we could struggle for goals and I am not convinced by Chris Martin at Premiership level. Also, too many doubts about Vaughan staying fit with previous injury record. I will be going to the Norwich match against Fulham on Saturday and I am confident that we can upset the odds and surprise people by getting off to a winning start. I was at the Fulham game last season and it was a pretty poor performance, but I have a feeling we will do a lot better against them this season.
Oh no not another Rhodes thread, FFS put Superman in a straight-jacket before he reads this thread or he might self harm !
Why can't people understand, he's too expensive on rediculous wages and untried higher than league 1? Too risky, for the millionth time!
Yes, he might well be expensive but if he was to produce goals in Premiership then his value would increase massively. Worth a gamble in my opinion, especially if we want to progress as a club and team. Pilkington was playing in League 1 before he signed for us and I thought he was brilliant last season.
Yes, but even now Pilkington isn't demanding to be paid twice as much as our next highest earner! Honestly, over the past few months this has been done to death! No matter how much you want it to happen, Norwich don't and nor do their more discerning fans! We've been too close to the abyss to venture down that road again!
I'm not saying we should necessarily try to sign him, but I personally don't see why it is such a ridiculous suggestion. Just because Supers rants and raves whenever anybody suggests it doesn't mean some people don't think it would be a good idea. Pilks and Bennett had never played any higher than League One, and two years ago Holty had only had one season in the Championship and they've not looked out of place in the Premiership for a second. I certainly don't want us to break the bank, and ok Huddersfield have supposedly whacked a huge transfer fee on him but that might be nothing more than trying to boost his value and if we could pick him up for £5m and 22k a week (I'm not saying we can, but nobody knows for certain that we can't) then I personally think it would be a risk worth taking. A goalscorer is a goalscorer, and he's still young with loads of time to improve and increase his value so I don't understand all this talk about it being a completely ridiculous suggestion at all.
I agree with Pyjamas, he's not got very much about him whenever I've seen him. He's not great all round and he's not good enough with any one particular trait to offer an alternative. He reminds me of Chris Martin.
Jordan Rhodes strikes me as "Grant Holt - The Next Generation" I believe he can be that good. He would fit us like a glove, but I've accepted it won't happen this window and if/when it does happen, we;ll have some serious company to fend off.
Didn't you say something very similar about all our signings from last summer though, about how they weren't good enough and would be quickly found out?
A striker who has only played at League 1 with a 7 million pricetag on him, and will be our highest paid player. Yes, he got goals but that is not a good deal for any team, once he has shown if has goals in him at Championship possibly. I agree with the whole Pilk, Bennett argument, he could do well in Prem but they didn't have such a hefty pricetag. Think we should look abroad for strikes Mohamed Abdellaou has been mentioned. i do think it will be better value for money abroad anyway
I'm with Supers and carrabuh on this one. Maybe we could stretch ourselves and pay the 'King's ransom' that Huddersfield are demanding, but as Dave says, there is NO WAY we would pay the salary he is trying to get - that is more like the obscene amount of money that QPR players are getting. Someone will take a punt on him (I really hope it's not us!!)and he may be another Pilks, or he may be another Wickham - only time will tell.
When we're his wages made public? Is he really on that much? That's the only thing that puts me off - think the £5 million would end up being an absolute steal - if he hit 15 in the prem he'd be worth how much next summer?
And how do we know he wants to "double his money" as people keep saying? Again, I'm not saying we SHOULD sign him, just saying that I don't find it as ridiculous a proposition as some people do.
We don't need another striker Holty Morro and Jacko will do the work required and I would be happier with Chris Martin a proven L1 goalscorer in our side as much as I would an ex binner who has had a good season in a low league One thing we have been privileged to watch with our rapid rise is the difference between a L1 defense and a PL defense only a few like Holty and Morro rise to be able to break that increase in quality, structure and discipline down, so it will always be a big gamble to take a punt on a Rhodes type now and I hope we never do
He's had more than "a good season" He's scored 97 in 180 games compared to Chrissy's 54 in 192 so to call Martin a "proven goalscorer" in the same sentence as dismissing Rhodes as a one-season wonder is a bit of a nonsense if you ask me. And what's the fact he played for 1p5wich for a couple of seasons a few years ago got to do with it? Absolutely nothing, that's what, it's not as if he's a binners fan or anything. I'm afraid your last paragraph makes no sense either. Really not sure how you come to the conclusion that "only a few like Holty and Morro rise to be able to break that increase in quality, structure and discipline down" and not possibly include Rhodes in that bracket despite the fact he's scored far more goals at a much quicker rate - including a nicely taken goal on his international debut - than either did at his age. And you're saying you hope we never take a punt on a Rhodes type player? What does that mean? Never take a punt on anyone with a strike rate better than a goal every other game? What kind of players should we 'take a punt' on then? I personally wouldn't feel at all confident heading into the season with just those strikers you mentioned (that's assuming Vaughan is on his way, which I think it a big shame). All it would take is for Holty to pick up an injury for six weeks or soand we'd be right down to the bare bones! Sorry, once again I'm not saying we should sign him, just saying I'd rather see a better argument for the case than the one you've just put forward because none of it really makes a lot of sense to me.
Doh yourself you plonker he is just another L1 striker if he was sooooo good he would have been snapped up by a bigger team by now If we buy we must buy well Doh Doh Doh will people ever learn
But what does "buy well" mean? Sorry again, I hope was hoping for some kind of reasoned argument based on some facts rather than personal opinion to counter the points I raised and give a bit of clarity to your claims. Alas not, all you can come up with is a bit of unnecessary abuse in my direction. Dear me, at least we've established who the "plonker" is anyway (that being me, obviously!)
I dont understand people saying theres not much about his game other than he scores goals. I really couldnt give two hoots if my striker did nothing other than putting the ball in the net - its often said its the hardest thing to do. The fact is now that he will likely be playing international football more often which can only help his future development. I would love to sign someone like that but I wouldnt want to break the wage structure for him or pay more than £5m - £6m. Unfortunately strikers are expensive but a risk on a 22 year old international who has a great scpring record in lower leagues doesnt sound too bad. If the deal was structured correctly both for the transfer with add ons and wages maybe including a health goal bonus then I would be happy to have him here and I think he would score in the Premier League. If he didnt, you have a young striker who has banged goals in at a lower level and is playing international football...... I am sure we would be able to recoup over half of what we pay for him now.
