Bought by Liverpool in 2010 for £1.7m, sold in 2013 for £6m. Not played an awful lot and so, arguably, not improved a great deal. Why is he worth three times more now then.

He isn't the first, but just the latest example of why the transfer market is such a minefield. Value for money is difficult to find.

Watched him play in the europa league a few times last year and the league at the beginning of the season and actually think he's a good player not sure why he gets such a bad press. The £1.7m deal was because charlton messed up holding onto him for an extra season when much higher offers had been rejected previously as well as shelvey's determination to try and help them back into the championship i don't think its a fair reflection of what he was worth then.

I'd imagine he has improved a lot since then as the player I saw last season would have got a league 1 team promoted single handedly

**** knows what Swansea think they are getting for 6 million pounds.

It's certainly not value for money.

I don't actually think they've paid anything I think I heard its been covered by the money theyre still owed for joe Allen so Jonjo + £10m for joe Allen is a good deal for swans I think

I think it is a bit bizarre, he's coming to the age where he'll have to prove himself at the highest level next year. Personally if he was worth £6 million he would have played a lot more for Liverpool, it's not like their blessed with centre midfielders at the moment.

I dunno, I'd say they've got a few - Gerrard, Allen, Lucas, Henderson, Coutinho, Suso would all pretty much walk into our centre-midfield.
I think it's a good signing for the Swans personally, he's never had anything like a decent run of games in the top flight so it will be interesting to see how he gets on and if he can live up to the potential he has shown in quite a few games I've seen of him.

And £6m these days for a young midfielder with a bit of class about him is absolute peanuts!

when you see it put like that i don't think it looks a bad bit of business but in all honesty, i think jonjo shelvey is a poor player and i'm relieved we didn't sign him, especially at that price <ok>

I may be the only one, but I think I can understand why Swansea have signed him. It's exactly the same reason there were brief rumours of interest in Bradley Johnson - with a very tough season coming up what with a European campaign as well, they really need a plan B if things go wrong. Laudrup has already made changes with a slightly more aggressive and direct style. I also think there is room in their starting eleven for a battling midfielder anyway, they have enough players who can play the "Swansea" way for them to take on the luxury (see what i did there?) of less technical ability, but aggressive enforcer.

Swansea also need some strength in depth - Newcastle really suffered with the additional matches and a paper thin squad. Shelvey is middling Prem standard and so, without blowing the budget, they have strengthened substantially. Some might disagree, but I would say that while Swansea's first team is better than ours, our team has better strength in depth and that is reflected in the way our squad coped with several key absences over the course of the season much better. Two more similar signings and Swans would have that depth.

Also don't forget that Liverpool didn't need to sell and Swansea were obviously looking for that different style midfielder. I'd say Swansea paid maybe £1m over the odds here, and that's not bad - he's also young enough (and British enough...) that we may find in two years time he is sold on for fifteen million because he fulfils his potential and then they'll be laughing.

I honestly don't think Suso and Henderson would walk into Norwich or Swansea. Suso possibly in a couple of years, and I do think he is a better prospect than Shelvey.

Personally I don't think he has shown enough quality at Liverpool to be valued as much as that. Charlton and when he was on loan at Blackpool he has been very good. Be interesting to see whether this will be successful or not.
