are there any service men/ex service men on here?

i've been considering joining the army for a few months. i'm basically bored and pissed off with the 9-5 life. so tedious and boring it's mind numbing.

i used to work with a guy who came out of the forces when he was in his late 30's and he said it was the best thing he'd ever done (joining, not leaving)

any advice would be recommended <cheers>

Few friends in the army and navy.

Royal Engineers if you like tanks/bridge layers etc.

The guy has a point though. The bad sides should be addressed while everybody talks about the great times to be had.

Obviously some people die, but that was pretty callous and disrespectful.

Go join the army. Become another statistic in the middle East while rich bankers and industrialists get even richer while you're out their protecting British and American oil interests.

Political comments aside, it's an excellent way to travel the world. It's not all front line, had a friend who joined the army, spent two years posted in Germany with regular trips to Egypt, says it was fantastic.

Naturally there is risk involved but so long as you have taken it into serious consideration then it's supposed to be a great way to 'find yourself', not to mention the kudos of being a soldier.

The picture was maybe the wrong way to go about it, but the point stands. I've no doubt the absolute div (and this isn't a general knock on the Army, he was a ****ing div) who tried to pressgang a few of us when we in the town while at college with the line 'you get to travel loads and the pay is mint' would also be the first one complaining if he actually had to do some Armying...

Yeh see your point but the fact is though, if he really wants into the army he should prepare himself for more hard hitting things than a photograph of a deceased soldier's funeral.

Not wumming at all. You'd have to be very naive to buy into the exotic travel angle and ignore the fact that people will be trying to kill you.

My dad is in, has been for 27 years. American military, but it has to have the same ups. Benefits, knowing that you're fighting for the country you love, and, at least in the us (don't know about British) moving around the world. I am also going to join in a couple of years, once I get my degree and get to join as an officer. If you're joining for the right reasons, then it can be the most rewarding experience. Good luck either way!
