Sunderland midfielder Stéphane Sessègnon believes Adam Johnson’s goal against Everton on Saturday will help him improve in a Black Cats shirt.

The England midfielder opened the scoring at Goodison Park and become only the second Sunderland player to register this season, before goals from Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic eventually won the game for Everton.

And Sessègnon has admitted that Johnson’s goal can only help him move on from what has been a difficult start to his Sunderland career since signing from reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in the summer.

“It will be good for him to get that goal.

“We all know the quality of Johnno, but we know it has been difficult for him so far,” he told the Evening Chronicle.

“However, that is not unusual. It is often difficult for players when they move to a new club.

“Hopefully, that will be the goal which gives him some more confidence and probably for the team as well. I am happy for him because he can be a really important player for us and one who can win us games.”

Sessègnon also admitted that he felt Martin O’Neill’s side were unlucky to have left Goodison Park empty handed, ruing a string of missed chances throughout.

“We were dangerous on the counter-attack and in the end it was hard luck because if we had scored a second goal it would have been enough to win,” he added.

“We had four occasions to score in the first half and if we had taken more than one we would have won.”

Can't argue with any of that Rog.
I would also add AJ is only now getting fully match fit.

The players are facing up to their teamwork responsibilities at last! Always a good sign when their emotions show rather than their insipid performance.

Would agree with this mate, but why has it taken so long to get match fit? there seems to be a trend here as he's not the only one is he? Sess struggled as well, as did Larsson. you reckon our training techniques are wrong?
