You may not have agreed with his politics but I’ll bet that there are a few who wish some of the politicians today had a personality like his. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/ce9gp7eke44t
Aye, RIP John. When you look at the current crop (of all political persuasions) and the culture of gifts and freebies, seems amazing that JP was lambasted for owning two cars which he bought himself!
Some good quotes on there about him: Former US Vice-President Al Gore, who worked with John Prescott on the Kyoto Protocol - the first global climate change agreement - in 1997, has paid tribute to the former deputy prime minister. “I’ve never worked with anyone in politics - on my side of the pond or his - quite like John Prescott," Gore says. "He possessed an inherent ability to connect with people about the issues that mattered to them - a talent that others spend years studying and cultivating, but that was second nature to him." "He fought like hell to negotiate the Kyoto Protocol and was an unwavering champion of climate action for decades to come. I’m forever grateful to John for that commitment to solving the climate crisis and will miss him as a dear friend.” Speaking on the Today programme, Former Prime Minister Tony Blair pays tribute to John Prescott, saying there was “no-one quite like him in British politics”. “He had a fantastic gut instinct about politics," he says. His family also looked back on his political achievements in their tribute saying: “John spent his life trying to improve the lives of others, fighting for social justice and protecting the environment, doing so from his time as a waiter on the cruise liners to becoming Britain’s longest serving deputy prime minister. “John dearly loved his home of Hull and representing its people in Parliament for 40 years was his greatest honour.”
He always seed to be what a mp from the labour party used to be, someone who knew about ordinary working class poeple experience of being one! A lad from a working class and trade union background with a passion for people and politics.
The Sam Allardyce of politics. A real character, with a sense of humour, who could take people down with wit and wisdom … … and if that failed a quick right cross The grinning lout, who threw an egg at him, soon had the smile wiped off his face. Rest in peace Mr Prescott
RIP John Prescott, my condolences to his family and friends. A politician with a social concience. I had so much respect for him, he swapped his overalls for a suite and never appeared out of place nor neglected his responsibilities
RIP John We could do with more of his ilk in modern life & politics. I love the fact he punched the egg-throwing twat, but there was a lot more to him than that.
The compliments recieved from politicians across the world highlight how good he was with people from all walks of life, unless they had a ridiculous mullet and liked wasting perfectly good eggs. William Hague's unrehearsed comments hit home for me. It's the true measure of the man when those he disagreed with pay him compliments as well.
The most unlikely mixtuture of a Politician any of us will remember. On the face of it, a working class, former MN Steward, and all Yorkshire. But he was the glue that kept Blair and Brown from taking each other, and their Party, down. He could mix it with all levels, apparently without being out of place but, for me, his ability ti ride out any storm, was his main achievement. The original Mr Teflon. Few politicians could have survived punching a member of The Public, whatever the provocation. (Think Mike Amesbury, and his experience.) And nobody (except Mrs P no doubt), got onto their high horse when the story about his extra carricular activities became public. One of those rare Politicians who any of us would be good company in all cicumstances.
