An incident allegedly involving Joey Barton leaving a rival manager with "blood pouring from his face" is being investigated by police.

The Fleetwood boss clashed with Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel in the tunnel after Saturday's 4-2 defeat at Oakwell, according to Barnsley player Cauley Woodrow.

He claimed on Twitter that Stendel had been "physically assaulted" and left with "blood pouring from his face".

    Woodrow later deleted the tweet.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "We are aware of something that has taken place in the tunnel after the game."

Barnsley said they "could confirm there was an alleged incident" and the club was "assisting the police with its enquiries".

Nobody from either club carried out the usual post-match media interviews, which saw Fleetwood have Harry Souttar sent off after 65 minutes with Barnsley leading 2-1.

Sky Sports News showed footage of Barton attempting to leave the ground in a car after the League One fixture but being prevented from doing so by police. Barton later rejoined the rest of his team for the journey back to Fleetwood.

BBC Radio Lancashire reports that Fleetwood have "declined to comment" on the incident. The Football Association is aware of the incident and will wait for the referee's report before investigating.

The EFL said the incident was a matter for the FA and the police.

Barton, 36, took over at League One side Fleetwood for his first managerial job last summer - one day after an 18-month Football Association ban for betting ended.

He was found to have placed 1,260 bets on matches over 10 years and admitted he was "addicted to gambling". His ban was later reduced by five months on appeal.

The former Burnley, Rangers, Manchester City, Newcastle and QPR midfielder has a history of controversy.

He served 77 days in prison for common assault and affray after an incident in Liverpool city centre in December 2007.

In 2004 he was fined for stubbing a cigar out in the eye of young team-mate Jamie Tandy at Manchester City's Christmas party. Tandy later sued Barton and won £65,000 in damages.

Barton was also fined after a confrontation with a teenage Everton fan at the team hotel in Bangkok on a pre-season tour in summer 2005.

And in May 2007 he was suspended by Manchester City after a training ground altercation left team-mate Ousmane Dabo needing hospital treatment. He was charged with assault, receiving a four-month suspended jail sentence in July 2008.

He has also courted controversy during his 10 months at Fleetwood. In January he was given a £2,000 fine and a two-week touchline ban after criticising officials following his side's defeat by Bristol Rovers.

I would have thought that the penny would have dropped for Barton by now.
HIs team were doing OK - to be fair to him - his first season in management so not sure he was expected to win the league however the self destruct button......when will he learn!!
Could be (will be)a short lived management
