"A big ocean, the Atlantic is different"

    Ever the philosopher.

To be fair though, if you're speaking to people who aren't necessarily fluent in English you will naturally speak like that, in simple language and in a similar accent to them so they can understand you more easily. I'm not sure anyone would understand that particular quote, but hey.

They can, it would just cost money. Which I'm guessing if they are still bottom in January they won't mind paying..

You simplify your language and you speak slowly and clearly, but you don't put on an accent, especially not one that doesn't sound the slightest bit French. Steve McClaren was speaking to a country that is almost entirely fluent in English, so what's his excuse?

This is true. Also, I suspect he's trying to learn the language, and without the correct inflections and accent the words can mean different things. Remember, this wasn't for our ears, it's for the French and I'm sure his English sounds less guttural to them with his affected accent. When ever I go to the Mediterranean for a holiday I come back sounding slightly like the country where I've stayed. And if it's France, my French usually improves tremendously. Within a few days of being back, I've forgotten it all again. :)

I don't know but maybe the Dutch players, although fluent English speakers, found his accent hard to understand so he affected a Dutch accent so they could understand him more easily. Same goes for Joey. It looks funny to us but it's commonly done and helps you be understood. Scottish people who move to England often moderate their accents, I don't see it as all that different to that.

At least Barton has a sense of humour anyway, he tweeted "good moaning" this morning <laugh>
