According to The Post! Newly-promoted Bristol City are considering a move for Joe Edwards, who captained Yeovil Town this season. The 24-year-old had indicated a desire to leave Huish Park after three years on the Somerset club's books and was released by the club on Friday. Relegated to League Two, the Glovers were in no position to offer Edwards a new deal and the Gloucester-born utility player is seeking a new challenge higher up the Football League. City boss Steve Cotterill could offer the former City player the chance to return to Ashton Gate - two-and-a-half years after he was released and made available on a free transfer. City have kept tabs on Edwards' progress during the past couple of seasons, regularly sending scouts to watch him play for Yeovil, both in the Championship and League One. Cotterill has already spoken publicly of the need to strengthen a squad that is high in quality, yet small in quantity, and Edwards, a versatile type, is a free agent and would represent value for money. Like so many players signed by Cotterill during his 18 months at the helm, Edwards is an athlete, boasts a sound work please log in to view this image ethic and can play in a number of positions. A right-back by trade, Edwards joined the Robins in 2009 and, although he made only two first-team appearances in three years, he has since operated successfully both in League One and the Championship. Joining Yeovil on a permanent basis in January 2013 following a successful loan spell at Huish Park, he helped them defeat Brentford 2-1 in the League One play-off final at Wembley and win promotion to the English second tier for the first time in the club's history. Reinvented as a central midfielder by then-Glovers boss Gary Johnson, Edwards captained the team in the Championship, playing all 45 games in the 2013-14 campaign. Hampered by an ankle injury, he played 34 times for the Glovers last season, but was unable to prevent the Somerset club suffering a second successive relegation. Edwards remains fiercely ambitious, wants to play at the highest level possible and could be handed a chance to do just that if City come calling. In an interview that appeared in the Western Gazette newspaper on April 27, he said: "I think every player has goals and my goal is to play in the Premier League one day, so you always have to look forward." Having released Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Dave Richards and Wade Elliott and seen loan signings George Saville and James Tavernier return to Wolves and Wigan, respectively, Cotterill is pursuing a number of transfer targets in order to supplement a squad that requires replenishing. But he has warned expectant City fans not to anticipate a rush of early signings when the transfer window opens. http://www.bristolpo...l#ixzz3Zo8icrbQ Wos reckon then!? Would you have him back? I've come to the point now where Cotts can sign anyone he bleedin likes as has been shown numerous of times, he knows what he is doing! Having said that I hope we are aiming higher than Joe Edwards. Haven't really seen much of Edwards but not sure if he is better than our current midfield 3...
I would, he shouldn't of been allowed to leave, but he has championship experience and seems to have matured He is free too which helps and I can't see wages being high
where players have captained sides at such young ages, it will say a lot about their mentality .. Cotts looks for that! he's a winner.
He's a winner that captained a relegated side last season. His Championship experience has not been a particularly happy one. He may be a local lad, but I believe we need to up our game a little. We are not an employment agency or charity organisation after all.
I thought we were a tad hasty cutting him loose a few seasons ago (pretty sure I aired that view on here), if he has progressed as I hoped he would, then why not. Not every signing will be a 1st team pick, we need to build a bigger & stronger squad with a good mix of youth and experience. Don't buy the notion that just because he was at Yeovil and they were relegated doesn't make him good enough for the Championship.
I also thought that we let him go too early as well. Also agree that being relegated with Yeovil doesn't make him a bad player. After all we did get Luke Freeman from a relegated Stevenage
Joe Edwards would be a good addition to the squad. Probably better as a deputy/competition for Ayling/Little than in midfield. And light years better than Wagstaff.
Just the sort of player we need...young & hungry for success...Cotts & his staff would improve him too...go get him, would be a very good signing IMO.
Sounds like a no brainer to me and although I don't have the local insight like most of you I was surprised when he disappeared from Bristol City. I have a sneaking suspicion that he would bite our hand off to return to Ashton Gate, as long as he doesn't bear any grudges, and could become an integral part of the next stage of our rise.
I'd have him back here. I think that we got rid of him far too early, but understandably because we were looking to shift as much dead weight as possible at that point. He sounds like the kind of player we want on our books. That being said, I'm not sure if he'd want to sign for a Championship team unless he was going to play regularly. I'm not sure if he's much of an upgrade on what we have at the moment. He'd be a good rotation option, but he could probably get first-team football in League 1 at a number of teams.
We also got A certain Luke Ayling from a relegated Yeovil, that didn't work out too bad did it? They were also a major part of a promotion side to the championship, they're young and developing, just the type of player we need, on the way up!
Personally no, the championship is a physical league and i prefer a bigger, stronger type of player, believe we will need a bigger presence in both boxes, so not for me.
Joe is good cover, and has ambitions at 24 is a good time to fight for his career did well in the champs last season but was on limb this, there is a number of managers around who like GJ can get teams safe or up, but cant keep them there...
Bobby Reid on the way back, I reckon we will keep him, his second spell at PA was a lesser show than his first.. but improved toward the last few games
