... la la la la lah la lah! 80 today and still with the club. Happy Birthday Jimmy Way better than the Gordon Banks save, don't make me laugh.
Happy 80th Birthday Monty...an SAFC legend. This double save often gets overlooked, but I thought this was up there as well. This helped get us to the final....semi final vs arsenal. 30 seconds into this clip....but just watch all of it anyway.
Many happy returns Jim , one of the ones, we often got the same buses to and from school, and I often spoke to his biggest fan in those days , his sister Maureen when she came up to Red House, or when groups of friends, many no longer with us, crossed paths in Southwick, or in the Town Center. Long while back now but seems just like yesterday. That 73 cup run and the celebrations after were some thing else, Hillsbro' and Wembley two of the best days of my life.
Perhaps I'm being naive but I find it a shame that someone like Montgomery will receive much less attention than the likes of Gascoigne ... ... one is someone who loves his club, his town and the game more than he does himself. The other is someone who's a cocaine sniffing, drink driving wife beater who thinks he's bigger than the game. Funny old game.
Full disclosure that in the final 1973 I was right behind the goal when I seen Cherry come at the far post and the rest is history. I have to admit I closed my eyes. I guess I was just a wuss.....truly a remarkable moment....or moments. The guy is a true legend in every sense.
Happy Birthday Monty lad! Still haven't seen anything like that save. It was so good that none of the commentators knew what had happened. Our fans did though! I think it's on the ITV coverage, and he makes the save, Brian Moore and Jimmy Hill try to work out what's just happened, thinking it might have hit the stanchion as used to happen sometimes back then. As they are babbling, you can hear our fans start singing, "Jimmy, Jimmy Monty, La la la la la". Great stuff man. Real legend Jimmy.
I used to live near montys man and word spread whenever he came to see her and for the next few days there was always small clumps of lads all 'acting natural', or 'just passing' in the hope he'd come again. Never seemed to occur to us it might take a few days or longer for the next visit!
He used to coach me as a GK years back at Darlington. I was only a kid so didn’t properly understand who he was. It’s fair to say my dad was in awe of him.
Happy Birthday Monty. Glad I got to see him play for a couple of seasons! Was always surprised when he conceded a goal he was that good. Wonderful keeper and wonderful man!!
