Jimmy Armfield RIP As a kid, nicked over the wall with a load of others from the back streets of Leckwith to watch what I believe was my first Cardiff City game, certainly the first under floodlights. I will never forget how the lights lit up the stadium...the lush green of the grass, and in particular the tangerine shirts of Blackpool. They had the captain of England, one Jimmy Armfield, and the prolific Ray Charnley. They kicked the ball about with such style and looked so good...we were going to get battered. Ha, we ended up winning it 3-2! Amazing, I thought it was 1964, but it turns out to be 26th August 1961! How is that even possible as I am in my fifties...bet Barry Tiger was there!
One of the better radio commentators. I never saw him play and in the game referred to I was one month old so missed that one
nice memory dude, im a little jealous of your story if im honest even though I got some of the real game in during the period I starting watching,... your experience was when football was football masky and nothing can take that from you ..............anyways was sad hearing about jimmy`s clocking out from this world of ours........so hats off 2 you dude, you was a true gent and a true footballer, and many could only dream of being held in such high regard as yourself. in the words of john lennon....“I'm not afraid of death because I don't believe in it. It's just getting out of one car, and into another.”
No I wasn't there Masky, I hadn't reached my 5th birthday at that stage. I didn't make an appearance until post 66 World Cup! By the way what is the secret of your eternal youth?
A bit cheeky Whiffletree pal, but hey ho! Barry Tiger pal, you drinking from the same glass as BFB....he was 60 for five years as I recall?
