Gaffer talks about his plans for the future ... Hasselbaink hails arrival of new signing Washington Striker fits the 'British backbone' philosophy he wants Gaffer sees it as his 'duty of care' to make club healthier QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has revealed a British backbone is key to what he is trying to build and create at Loftus Road. Following the arrival of Conor Washington on a three-and-a-half year deal from Peterborough United yesterday (Tuesday), Hasselbaink spoke in-depth to www.qpr.co.uk about his plans for the future in W12. "It's extremely important we try and get a British backbone to our squad," he said. "That needs to be the core of this club - the know-how, the understanding, the continuity. "I'm not saying we won't sign foreign players - we will if they are right for us. But we need a healthy British contingent within our squad. "The fans relate to British players, because they're your own countrymen. "As manager of this fantastic club, I've got a duty of care to make this club healthier than it is at present and that is what myself and Les (Ferdinand) are trying to do. "We both want to get that verve and feeling back to Loftus Road, back to QPR. "That beautiful urban feeling that QPR has always been renowned for, with young, hungry, exciting individuals, combined with some experienced players. To create a bright future for QPR." Washington's arrival follows the recent departure of Charlie Austin to Southampton, but Hasselbaink was keen to play down comparisons between the two, commenting: "Conor is his own player - he's not a direct replacement for Charlie, far from it. "He's a player we believe in and a player we are convinced will get goals at this level. "You always have to have a certain amount of patience with players coming in from a lower level, but I have great belief in him and he is the kind of player who has great belief in himself, which is important. "He has that cockiness that I like in players - and that cockiness that you need as a player if you want to succeed at a higher level." I like the fibre of jfh's fabric...yes only one win but bar two last minute defeats only one loss ...he is steadying our ship imho which can only be good!
I had a solid oak bedstead that I was dismantling fall on my solid British backbone a couple of hours ago. As a result I would be happy to donate it (my backbone) to Jimmy after I have sourced a new one made of cheap imported Chinese steel. He can have the ****ing bed as well if he's prepared to take it away.
Good words, hope he's given the time to do it. Hopefully we can stabilise and have a solid finish to the season.
British backbone. What's that then? The closest we've been to that was the Warnock promo season when we went up courtesy of our Moroccan magician, Argentinian playmaker, Icelandic hitman and Irish stopper. I agree with the sentiment though if by that he means resilience and a 'never say die' attitude both of which have been sadly lacking for several years now.
When I read that, thoughts of Derry & Hill, lovely stuff, then you remember the non British members of the squad and their importance. However Liking Jimmy saying the right things. Oh does he mean he's about to give Henry a new contract!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
