A clause in his contract allows him to leave for free because of the club’s relegation.

Despite being 34, Defoe shows no signs of slowing up just yet and has netted 29 league goals in the last two seasons on Wearside, he has at least another two seasons, and for free, would make a good addition to any squad.

You boys should give it some serious thought, would love him to come to Swansea, but maybe his wages would be a tad high for us, thoughts?

Fair comment but he still has goals in him at PL level, and that's not to be sniffed at.

Two years ago it was not clear if he would be any type of success back in the Prem after going out to pasture in Canada. Sunderland took a chance on him and it paid off. I'd say he's a similar striker to Gayle, so if we could get him and keep Gayle, he could sit in as cover/competition assuming Rafa's planning on using a similar formation this season. I'd take him on a short term deal - 2 years?

Not back up to Gayle though. You might as well keep Gayle as back up to someone who is better than both of them and has a long term future for the club. The only real positive in signing Defoe over someone else would be he wouldn't cost a lot (not free as there would millions in signing on fees).

I'd take Defoe like a shot, just like I did in Platoon.

    Best wishes
    Tom Berenger.

If we are talking about improving the squad player for player then yes it's no brainer. He would a great replacement for Murphy. A free transfer, who is based in the NE and has 14 goals for an already relegated team. Plus I think he would be a great mentor for our younger strikers. Having said all that I think the lure of going back to London will be too much to turn down and I fully expect him to sign for palace.

Why would he sign for relegation fodder when he could come here? :emoticon-0105-wink:

I'd take him but he is heading one of three locations, Palace, West Ham, or Bournemouth

My money would be on Palace.
