Aston Villa web site says Jed Steer will join them as a free agent on Jul 1st.

Fair play to Lambert - he likes to get his shopping done early while others are still thumbing their wallets. Shame to lose Jed though - definitely one for the future.

    Yes, it's very disappointing.

It's strange that there is no announcement from Norwich. Is this another occasion where Villa's definition of a free agent is at odds with Norwich's definition?!

No point crying too much he was 5th choice last season, great prospect though, keepers don't age too quick and hopefully ruddy will stay for a while.

Seems a bit of a weird one to be honest. With Rudd out on loan all season and Camp being released, Steer is now third choice and would more than likely play any cup games we have. Going to Villa he's going to be fourth choice and probably be sent out on loan.

actually dazz, it's a bright move by the lad. with shay given on his way out, he'll be 2nd choice at villa and will definitely play cup games. he's behind bunn here. i knew this was happening so not shocked by it but we did all we could - offered him a new deal but the kid wanted to go, so when a player says they want to leave, there's not a great deal that can be done. the only point that is a bit odd is that dave watson is here. i have high hopes for the lad so i hope he does really well - i rate him higher than rudd myself (though there's not a huge amount in it) so think he'll be a success given time. <ok>

    From the NCFC Facebook page:

    Norwich City FC
JED STEER - City Chief Executive David McNally has tonight tweeted regarding young goalkeeper Jed Steer.

Speaking on his official account @DavidMcNally62, he said: "Jed was offered a new contract. He has decided to move on. As a top young player, we expect to receive considerable compensation for him.

"The departure of three of our support staff to Aston Villa was entirely amicable and we were pleased with the outcome."

Another problem not mentioned. We need 3 GK's and I assumed Jed would have been number 3 and not counted in the squad of 25. Now we need a 3rd keeper who will presumably be over 21 years of age age and have to take up a squad place. With all the dithering on the touchline last year - shall we make a substitution or not or should we have another committee meeting first - and all the dithering on transfer ins and outs I am beginning to wonder whether Hughton knows what he wants to do. Over to you Supers to convince me that I am wrong.

If Given is going Supers, then Steer is still going to be behind Guzan and Siegrist, so in exactly the same position as he would have been here

Substitutions fair one but how has he dithered in the transfer window?

We offered him a contract, what more could we have done with him? The only thing that may have caused issue is Rudd's season long loan to Preston. As soon as that was agreed, presumably Steer realised that he wasn't going to get a substantial loan arranged for next season if he did stay, so decided it was in his best interests to move elsewhere.

As to what we could have done differently, I guess convincing Preston to take both for 6 month stints would have been better, but I can't see why they'd have wanted to. Going forwards though, whether we need a third keeper is presumably down to whether Rudd has a recall clause or not. If we can get him back in 24hrs, it's not an issue, but if not, how good is Remi Matthews, or even Tyler Reading and Will Britt? Equally, we survived the season before last with Ruddy as our only senior keeper, and we'd have to be desperately unlucky to have an injury like Ruddy had this season. It's one for Hughton to ponder.

Ruddy is still young for a keeper and has a long contract. Bunn will play the cup games and back up Ruddy, so what's the worry? Either City have a recall option for Rudd, or Marshall from the development squad can cover if both Ruddy and Bunn are unavailable (not very likely!).

Wait, who's Marshall? Have I missed another young keeper we've got?

Its a shame we have lost Steer as a young keeper build wise and ability he would out of all our keepers pushed Ruddy in a couple of seasons for first team football. He will be Aston Villa No1 within two years to three years.

Aston Villa will have got a bargain not matter how much we get because he is under 24

Another difference between Lambert and Hughton. Lambert was happy with Ruddy, Rudd and Steer as his 3 keepers. Hughton brought in Bunn and then, when Ruddy was injured, brought in Camp. If he wasn't happy with Rudd or Steer as 3rd choice last year he is hardly likely to rely on a kid from the Youth Team this year. Another experienced keeper and that will be 24 contracted eligible squad players on the books which doesn't leave a lot of room to overhaul the squad unless we start bringing a few in and selling a few contracted players to leave the space. ' Dithering ' an unfair description? Perhaps - only time will tell - but are you really convinced that Hughton has really made up his mind what he wants or does he just wait and see what happens and then takes it from there? I know the window doesn't officially open until Monday but that hasn't stopped other Clubs has it? I am more concerned with the fact that we start playing friendlies again in 3 weeks time and at this rate Hughton will have no idea what next seasons squad will be.

Which other clubs other than Villa have signed more players than us, just out of interest? Please..

Can't argue with any of that, but you have to consider the player's point of view as well - CH doesn't seem to rate him and he has to take whatever opportunity there is to improve his chances of at least being on the bench.

1950Canary and others - I'm not convinced that the squad needs a major overhaul (another 3-4 players max!!) and it's quite possible that a few of our targets are on holiday anyway. If there have been no more signings before say the middle of July, only then will I be wondering what's going on. <ok>

plenty of time left to sign players, not concerned at all. obviously it would be nicer to have them in earlier to bed in, but it doesn't always work like that. hughton and mcnally will have a plan, keep the faith 1950.

let's not forget we have already signed our record-fee striker
