    Head-to-head
    • Colombia are unbeaten in their two previous games against Japan.
    • They beat them 1-0 in the group stage of the 2003 Confederations Cup. The sides also drew 0-0 in a friendly in Japan in 2007.
    Japan
    • The Blue Samurai have never beaten a South American side at a World Cup. They lost 1-0 to Argentina in 1998, 4-1 to Brazil in 2006 and drew 0-0 with Paraguay in 2010 (subsequently losing in a penalty shoot-out).
    • Keisuke Honda has had a direct involvement in four of Japan's last five World Cup finals goals (three goals, one assist).
    • He is the first Japanese player to score at two separate World Cups.
    Colombia
    • This is the first time Colombia have won more than one match at a World Cup, and they have already equalled their record for goals scored at the tournament (five).
    • Juan Cuadrado has assisted three of Los Cafeteros' five goals in Brazil.
    • Colombia are unbeaten in their last nine games (W5, D4) since losing 2-0 in Uruguay last September.
    • James Rodriguez has scored in his last four appearances for Colombia, including their two World Cup matches. He needs one more goal to become Colombia's top scorer in World Cup history.
    • Reserve goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon could become the oldest player to feature in a World Cup match. He celebrates his 43rd birthday on Saturday. The current record is held by Roger Milla, who was 42 years and 39 days old when he faced Russia at the 1994 World Cup.

So Gaston will almost certainly be our remaining representative. Go Gaston, I suppose. Come home Maya.

Am I the only one who thinks South America have a disproportionate amount of World Cup places?

    That's half the bloody continent!

One of their places should go to Africa or Asia.

Why? All of the South American teams deserve it.

So you'd rather someone like China played rather than Chile?

No other continent has such a disproportionately high amount of representation, it's unfair

I'd rather see Egypt or Senegal, or Jordan or Uzbekistan, than Ecuador or Colombia

interesting that you'd use colombia in your example, seeing as they are one of the better teams in this world cup

Yeah, if any South American team had to be dropped it would be Uruguay. They finished 5th.

My interest in a team has little relation to how good they are. Colombia and Ecuador just don't interest me as much as Egypt or Senegal would. I think that's because of the huge amount of places South America has and the little variation in the teams from that continent which participate in the world cup.

Wouldn't mind that if it got rid of Suarez

I take it you'll be watching the African Cup of Nations all the way through the qualifiers?
