I'd love it if JWP could look back on a long career with Saints and realised he achieved as much as any of the other players who jumped ship when they were hot.
How long do Fonte and Cork have left on theirs? I'd suggest the board might want to wait until closer to the end before deciding on renewals.
Yeah, good chance we won't see them sign new ones this summer then. Though I hope at least Fonte does.
Koeman indicated in an interview that contracts for players such as Fonte and Cork weren't priorities...I presume for 2 reasons: everyone is tied up trying to sign new players and he needs to assess both players before he makes a decision. Whatever we think about 10 k/wk, JWP deserves a higher wage if we want to stop his agent looking elsewhere.
£10k per week, £520k a year. There are bankers, solicitors, etc. earning a lot more than that and they can do it until old age. If you're earning that until having to retire in your 30s that is not a ridiculous income at all.
Mmm, but they are not bankers, solicitors, surgeons, etc... And in the great scheme of things they do a relatively unimportant job. If you take football away, nobody dies, nobody breaks the law any more than they did before directly, the economy doesn't actually fall over. And instead of people watching we might find there is a significantly fitter population getting off their arses and doing something with the spare time. The excuse that they retire somewhere around 35 is an old one. Get a job, just like the rest of us have to do, and live within one's means. And they'll be significant once they get to their mythical retirement age. Devil's Advocate.
True, their importance to society is arguably much less. But, they work in the entertainment industry. Compare them to film stars, artists and those in the music industry at the very top level.
Such a nonsense argument on both sides. You can't compare wages for different professions like that. I can bitch about my pay all I like (Teacher) but the fact is no-one is paying Sky 40 pound a month for the ability to watch me and my co-workers do our thing. If they were, and teaching were a huge spectator sport then maybe I'd be able to compare! You don't have a studio full of ex-teachers providing analysis after lessons finish: "Beautiful transition there but you have to make sure you're always keeping your eyes on young Chris Jones. There he is, he ghosts into the role play area with colouring pens and before you know it, Sara has pictures of hearts drawn all over her phonics worksheet. Basic. Sunday school stuff."
There's a stereotype of footballers not being that clever, and if they weren't footballers or had normal wages, where would they work instead/after they retire? What would the TOWIE w**kers do for jobs if they weren't being paid loads for their ****e TV?
You can't justify this angle from a capitalist or socialist point of view. In the system we live in their income is defined by the free market, and in a hypothetical system where income is defined by importance then entertainment would still rank highly, lest we live in some soulless dystopia. The rest of us are able to pursue education as far as we like. Footballers sacrifice that and are shoehorned into a career path in their teens which ends in their 30s leaving them with no real world skills or qualifications (unless they take coaching badges, which is pretty much the only decent option).
It's all a stupid argument anyway because of the money the football industry makes. Would you rather those millions of pounds that go into footballer salaries went into the pockets of the owners or Rupert Murdoch?
