Martin O'Neill is set to land forward James McFadden at some point next week, as he looks to bolster his attacking options. The former Scotland frontman had looked close to agreeing a deal to come to the Stadium of Light last week, but the contract failed to go through in time for the weekend. Now a deal until the end of the season is close to agreement and there is also the option of a longer contract, if all parties agree to extend it at the end of the season. A source close to the player told the Journal: "James would still like the deal to be done. There's no timeline on it at the moment and we're not starting to look elsewhere or anything. "Obviously we'd like to have got the deal done a bit quicker but we're still hopeful. We'll just wait to see what happens now."
surely with the deal only till January we are certainly going to be active in the January transfer window with regards of looking for a new attacker! personally I think January is going to be quite a busy window for us, I can see us going out and bringing in up to 4 players and we need to! Back to McFadden its a decent enough deal, cannot see him getting much game time but if he comes off the bench and assists in a goal or grabs a goal that helps us get a point or three then he will of done what MoN wanted.
on the few games ive have seen McFadden play he looked quite dangerous, however some on here believe he is not worth the effort, my view is that if he has fire in his belly to play and prove a point then get him in , as he is a better option than what we have at the moment.
Think that is the statement - bit part player really but so is Saha - One can play first hour and the other for the final 30 - 2 different options - isn't McFadden only 28 or something? Had injury problems so lets see what happens but I think the lad A.Trialist who played for the reserves is a close relation!! He can also play on the wing so may put some pressure on McClean!
McFadden to seal Sunderland deal James McFadden Sunderland Echo Published on Thursday 25 October 2012 14:17 JAMES McFADDEN is set to imminently complete the formalities of his short-term deal at the Stadium of Light. The Echo revealed last week how free agent McFadden had been offered a two-month contract at Sunderland, which would see the Scotland international sign for the Black Cats until the January transfer window. Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill expects McFadden, who joined the Wearsiders on trial last month, to be officially confirmed in the next few hours, with a short-term contract providing the 29-year-old with a chance to prove his fitness. O’Neill said today: “With a little bit of luck, he’ll sign this afternoon - certainly at the latest tomorrow. “That will be a short-term contract that suits all parties. “That gives him the opportunity to get fit, join the squad and then try to get into the team. “The idea of signing him is that he can show what he thinks he’s capable of doing. “We’ll have to see if it’s the James McFadden of old and if it is, that will benefit us.” If registered by Friday’s noon deadline, McFadden could be eligible for Saturday’s clash at Stoke City. But after featuring just twice for Sunderland under-21s in a pair of behind-closed-doors friendlies, McFadden is still short of match fitness after being released by Everton at the end of last season.
It's a no lose situation for us. He's free and won't be commanding massive wages so why not give the lad a chance to show us what he can do? as Rog has said, he'll be hungry and keen to impress and the more options we have the better. We're not exactly banging them in for fun right now are we?
