Am I the only person who thinks these 2 are totally overrated ??? I mean £15-20m for Jagielka ? The same for Cahill ? I didn't see them carry their teams defensively, I didn't see them as a thorn in the side of opposing teams. Neither of them have that extra height we need and neither can stand up to Drogba and other powerful strikers. I'd take Samba over these 2 clowns any day of the week, the man is a menace and a brute and he loves defending. There is no way the likes of Jason Roberts, Drogba, et al would bully him in a game. Jagielka would get brushed aside and Cahill .. well ... I don't rate him at all.
I think the same. I think these stories happen like this: We have a supposed defensive weakness. We are a 'foreign' team who play 'tippy-tappy football' and 'need' a Good, Honest English Spine who won't 'bottle' it when the going gets tough. Jagielka and Cahill are such players and could be available for the cheap price of £20million or whatever, which is fair for English Talent instead of your cheaper foreign rubbish. Arsenal NEED them and therefore must have put in bids. I haven't yet seen any genuine proof that we are looking at these players, please correct me if Arsene has confirmed this.
I agree, there average players, not gonna win an EPL or CL that's for sure. Sakho, Subotic, Hummels, etc are the one's worth buying.
I don't care where they come from as long as they are a fair price and good at defending. Neither of these 2 are being offered at a fair price and I don't see them as that good either - so its a double whammy of a bad deal.
Everton (and Jagielka) actually have a very good record against the so-called Chelsea 'bullies'. Just sayin'...
Everton have kept more clean sheets against Drogba than we have, in recent seasons. So Jagielka must be doing something right. Plus, I don't understand the 'no height = useless in the air' argument. It's also about timing and leap aswell. Crouch is a giant but a useless header of the ball.
What a load of Rubbish. Jagielka make lack height (and we do need more tall players) but he's strong as an ox. Also Both Jagielka and Cahill can actually pass the ball something Samba doesnt have to worry about at Blackburn.
Am I right in thinking that Samba's best performances have come when Blackburn have been penned back and are defending for their lives? The only team that can do that to Arsenal is Barca. I don't think he'd do nearly as well playing as high up the pitch as our CB's usually do.
I think jagielka would be a great signing for us. He's good on the ball, can play across the back 4, and as a defensive midfielder if needed.
I think that bodies apart, we do need to sharpen our defensive tactics which includes organising the back four in situations like set pieces. We do have a habit of giving away goals all too cheaply. I heard it said more than once last season that we tend to leave the work of defence solely to defenders when perhaps it is something most of the team should take a part in. I think the overall mindset of the team needs to be revamped. If we can beat Utd, Chelsea and Barca, we should be able to handle the likes of Newcastle, West Brom and Spurs more convincingly.
