His points per game ratio was good enough to let him have a summer spend and see how he got on. However, at least Sandgaard has acted quickly, although I am sceptical on the new appointment. I am certain he will recruit a Yank or a Dane, he has no contacts over here.
All kinds of names in the frame, including Lee Bowyer... What about Sir Chris? unfinished business...
Can we try a new name rather than always dreaming of the past. Mind you, if anyone knows a decent medium, we could try and get in touch with the spirit of Jimmy Seed. On a serious note, I was gobsmacked by this. The man got us from 22nd in the league up to mid table, and had a period where he had no strikers to play. having said which, he still persisted with two up top even when Burstow was the only recognised striker, and his perpetual adherance to 3-5-2 gave the impssion he had no idea how to change. But this is not how I wanted to see a man like that leave the club. Thanks for everything JJ
I'm pretty sure Charlton won't be appointing any previous managers. But there will always be idle chat about old managers coming back. Surely happens at every Club when they change gaffer. Especially when that Club has been in decline for a while. Curbs, Bowyer, Powell, Les Reed Our programme notes each game under Reed were masterful works of fantasy fiction...
Makes no sense to go ahead with recruitment before a new manager is appointed, unless TS is looking for a head coach, with MS taking charge of recruitment. Doesn't seem right, and I only hope that he stumbles across the right manager this time, but I can't say I feel any less pessimistic about next season than I did before.
My God, I hope we don't go down the 'head coach' route again. It didn't work under Roland, it was a disaster. How many successful Clubs have a figurehead coach and suits in the background making all the real decisions? None. We need a strong manager. A man who'll stamp his philosophy on the squad and the whole Club. Not a big ego to clash with TS, but a no-nonsense gaffer who'll let his tactics and nouse do the talking.
It's a real pity. And I'll confess my feelings are divided. We all love Jacko, and he did save us from relegation to the 4th tier. But I just feel he's too inexperienced and too inflexible to win promotion for Charlton. Sometimes to beat decent opposition you have to mix it up and attack your opponents' weaknesses. Did JJ show any signs of being able to do that? Seems to me that Charlton did well when their opponents had an off day. If the opposition was up for it, we got beaten every time. Our lack of draws is also evidence of this I think. We could not turn a bad game into a point. At the Valley I saw Morecambe beat us just by playing simple football in a tidy way. Morecambe, for f**k sake. I imagine Sandgaard was at that game as well.
Absolutely no sign of a new manager being appointed, which doesn't bode well. TS could have problems recruiting a successful manager, if he's not going to be in charge of player recruitment.
I think we should have a new man in place by week commencing 23rd May, when others should be coming back from holidays. End of May absolute latest. Otherwise next season could be even poorer than the one just gone. Sadly it looks like player recruitment may now be a back room issue. And that's a problem.
And it's not the backroom boys who pay the price. Any manager worth his salt will want to have the final say on recruitment. Steve Brown has blamed recruitment for the situation and I agree.
