    Jack Shiel RIP

The death of Newcastle's oldest surviving first team player has been reported by his family, aged 96.

Amble-born Jack Shiel passed away in hospital on November 30th and a funeral service will be staged at Cowpen Crematorium on Saturday at 11.30am.

Shiel joined United from Seahouses in December 1936 for the princely sum of £10. A reserve team regular, the centre forward debuted in a 0-3 loss at Barnsley in September 1937, a game which proved to be the sole senior appearance of his United career.

Released by United the following year, Jack joined North Shields before returning to the Football League in 1938 with Huddersfield Town.

However he had only one senior game for the Terriers - against Middlesbough in March 1939 - before being released with the onset of World War II imminent.

Jack served on a Royal Navy minesweeper during the conflict, later skippering a Seahouses fishing boat and running tourist boat trips to the Farne Islands as part of the family business.

Has anybody noticed how many Amble lads have actually played for Newcastle? I seem to remember quite a lot used to, but a bit before my time.
